Messin with Macchiato 🐶

Okay, so you saw my last post about giving Mach ghost treats to see if he catches on! It was such a blast, even if Macchiato wasn't entirely impressed with my 'ghost' throwing skills, haha. For those wondering, 'ghost treats' is just my silly way of describing how I sometimes toss treats quickly or in a way that makes them seem to vanish mid-air, hoping for that perfect catch! It's one of our little fabulous adventures we have together. Since that little experiment, I’ve been thinking a lot about all the fun ways we can turn simple treat time into an exciting game for our furry friends. Especially with active breeds like Pitbulls and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, mental and physical stimulation is key! Macchiato is such an intelligent boy, and I've found that just handing him a treat isn't nearly as rewarding for him (or for me!) as making him 'work' for it a little. One of Macchiato’s absolute favorite 'adventures' is when we play hide-and-seek with treats. I’ll make him sit and stay in one room, then I'll hide a few of his favorite small treats around another room – under a rug, behind a cushion, or even inside a puzzle toy. When I release him, watching him sniff them out is pure joy! It engages his powerful sense of smell and gives him a wonderful mental workout. It's truly a sight to see his tail wagging when he finally sniffs out that last hidden goodie. Another great 'fabulous adventure' we've started is practicing new tricks with treats as rewards. Beyond basic 'sit' and 'stay', we're working on 'spin' and 'high five'. It's amazing how quickly he catches on when there's a tasty incentive involved! I break down new tricks into tiny steps, rewarding each successful mini-step with a treat. This positive reinforcement makes training fun and builds such a strong bond. Plus, it's hilarious to watch him try to figure out a new move, sometimes looking completely bewildered before he has that 'aha!' moment. We also love our 'treat scatter' game, especially on grass. I'll scatter a handful of his kibble or small treats across a patch of lawn, and he gets to forage for them. It's a natural behavior for dogs, and it slows down his eating while providing a good dose of enrichment. For my Macchiato, it’s like a mini scavenger hunt every time, and he gets so excited when he realizes what we're about to do. These aren't just about treats; they're about creating moments, building trust, and giving my energetic Staffy a way to burn off some of that amazing energy. Every interaction becomes a mini-adventure, whether it's trying to get him to catch on to a new game or just seeing his reaction to a 'ghost treat'. What are your favorite treat games with your dog?
