From Pastry Chef to Corporate Worker....and Back to Baking

🍋 Hi Lemon8, I'm Charlene.

A full-time corporate worker, mum, and the baker behind Susie's Bakes. 👩🏻‍🍳

I spent 8 years working as a pastry chef before moving into a corporate role, but the love for baking never really left.

So after office hours, family time, and everything in between, I found myself reaching for my whisk again. 🧁

Many people ask me why it's called Susie's Bakes.

Susie was my mum. She loved baking, cooking, and feeding the people she loved. I think that's where my love for baking began. ❤️

Today, Susie's Bakes is my little passion project, where I create cakes, cupcakes and sweet treats for life's special moments.

Thank you for being here and supporting my little baking journey. 🍰

I'd love to get to know you too — what brought you to Lemon8? 💓

... Read moreBalancing a full-time corporate job, motherhood, and a passion for baking is undeniably challenging, but it is extremely rewarding. I have found that carving out moments after work and family time to reconnect with baking provides a comforting creative outlet. Much like Charlene, who rekindled her love for baking after years in a corporate role, many home bakers find that baking is not just a hobby but a meaningful way to honor family traditions and create joyous memories. One of the things that resonate deeply with me is how baking can be a tribute to loved ones, similar to how Charlene named her passion project Susie's Bakes after her mum who inspired her early love in the kitchen. This personal connection brings a unique warmth and story to each cake or cupcake made, turning simple sweet treats into cherished celebrations. Whether you're a working parent or someone transitioning careers, baking can remind you of what truly matters—family, passion, and the simple joy of creating something delicious. In practical terms, I’ve learned that to maintain this balance successfully, it's helpful to prepare baking ingredients and plan recipes in advance. Using tried-and-true recipes helps conserve mental energy, while occasional experimentation keeps the process exciting. Sharing this journey on platforms like Lemon8 helps build a supportive community of fellow bakers and admirers who encourage continuous growth and connection. Ultimately, this blend of corporate discipline and creative freedom can help any home baker transform their passion into a fulfilling side project or even a new career path.
