Having spent over two decades in the operating room, I can attest that each year brings new lessons and growth as a surgical technologist. Working predominantly four 10-hour shifts, I’ve come to appreciate the rhythm and demands of this schedule — it allows for focused, intensive workdays with recovery time in between. Total joint replacements have always been my favorite cases. There's something incredibly rewarding about assisting in restoring mobility and quality of life for patients through these complex procedures. The meticulous preparation of instruments and anticipating the surgeon’s needs makes this a dynamic and fulfilling aspect of surgical tech work. On the other hand, cataract surgeries present their own unique challenges. Though they are often shorter and considered routine, the precision required is immense. The small size of the surgical field means that any lapse in focus can have significant consequences. Personally, cataract cases have never been my favorite due to the fine attention to detail needed and the strain it sometimes puts on the eyes over repeated procedures. A phrase that has become a personal mantra in the OR is "Father God." It's a reminder to stay calm, centered, and trust in the process, especially during high-pressure moments. For those new to the field or still students, tracking your own experiences—years in practice, preferred types of cases, most challenging procedures, and personal go-to phrases—can be a valuable reflection tool.
