It turns out, there's a whole spectrum of amber types, each with its own unique characteristics and origins. It's like discovering a secret world within a gemstone! Here are some of the fascinating varieties I've come across: Baltic Amber (Succinite): The Classic Beauty This is probably the most well-known type, often associated with the classic golden-yellow to orange-brown hues. It's primarily found around the Baltic Sea region, hence the name. What makes Baltic amber so special is its high succinic acid content, which is believed by some to have therapeutic properties. You'll often see it with tiny bubbles or even ancient insect inclusions, which are just incredible windows into the past! Green Amber: A Touch of Nature When I first saw green amber, I was absolutely captivated! It's not naturally green in its raw form; this color is usually achieved through a heat treatment process that enhances its natural greenish tint. The result is a stunning, often translucent stone that reminds me of mossy forests or deep sea colors. It's so unique and definitely a conversation starter. Blue Amber: The Rarest Jewel Okay, this one is truly mind-blowing! Blue amber is incredibly rare and primarily found in the Dominican Republic and Sumatra. What's wild is that it doesn't always look blue – it appears brownish or yellowish under normal light. But when exposed to natural sunlight or UV light, it exhibits a striking, fluorescent blue glow! Red Amber (Cherry Amber): Deep & Fiery Sometimes called cherry amber, this type boasts rich, deep red to reddish-brown tones. It's often achieved by heating darker amber, which intensifies its color. The deeper the red, the more prized it often is. It has such a luxurious, warm feel to it, perfect for adding a pop of rich color to any outfit. Black Amber: The Mysterious One Yes, there's even black amber! While it might look opaque and black, it's often very dark brown or dark red amber that appears black due to the amount of impurities or organic matter within it. When held up to a strong light, you might still catch glimpses of its true, dark earthy color. It has a very grounding and mysterious vibe, making for some truly unique pieces of jewelry. White/Milky Amber: Soft & Creamy This type, often referred to as 'bone amber' or 'royal amber,' has a soft, opaque, and creamy appearance.
