Daily Eye Drawing

Even a quick sketch helps you observe proportions, understand light and shadow, and practice those delicate curves. I've found that keeping a small sketchbook and a trusty pen with me makes it easy to fit in a 'Daily Eye Drawing' session, whether I'm on a bus, waiting for an appointment, or just unwinding at the end of the day. When it comes to tools, you really don't need much. I mostly use fineliner pens for outlines and sometimes a ballpoint pen for shading, as it gives a nice texture. Don't feel pressured to buy expensive supplies. Start with what you have! The magic truly happens with observation and practice. I spend a lot of time looking at different eyes – photos, people around me, even my own reflection. Every eye tells a story, and trying to capture that emotion or personality is what makes eye art so endlessly fascinating. My personal approach to drawing an eye usually starts with the basic almond shape, then I carefully place the iris and pupil. The eyelids are crucial for giving depth, and I pay close attention to the tear duct area and the subtle folds. Shading is where the realism really comes in. I build up layers, focusing on the darks of the pupil and the soft transitions around the iris and under the brow bone. Don't forget the highlights! A tiny white space in the pupil can bring an eye to life. Eyelashes are the final touch, adding elegance and definition, but remember they curve and vary in length. If you’re struggling to capture realism or expression, my biggest tip is to break it down. Don't try to draw the whole eye at once. Focus on one element – the curve of an eyelid, the reflection in the iris, the length of an eyelash. And don't be afraid to make mistakes! They're just opportunities to learn.
