Something else besides politics & guns ⬇️

This stunning place holds both beauty and danger, and if you're planning to explore it, take every precaution.

And if your sick of your feed being clogged up by politics, guns, or negativity, let’s instead talk about this stunning but challenging trail near Royal Gorge, California, which is a hike for the experienced adventurer.

The terrain here is rugged, and the path demands respect, especially considering what happened earlier this year.

Three hikers tragically lost their lives here, a sobering reminder that nature can be both beautiful and dangerous.

When I made the trek out here last month, I spent 30 minutes at the base of the falls, remembering these lost souls, and was reminded how precious life is.

Stay safe out there, and always remember to leave the trail better than you found it.

Trail Guide:

* Difficulty: Advanced (only for seasoned hikers)

* Distance: 15 miles out-and-back, GPX tracks required

* Elevation: ~2800 ft (most of it on the way back, so be ready for a tough climb)

* Best Time to Go: Late July to September, when the water levels are low and the flows are calmer. DO NOT attempt to swim until the flow calms down (safety first).

* Trailhead Parking: For 4x4 vehicles, park at (39.3013471, -120.4355571). If you don’t have a 4x4, use (39.3054688, -120.4340933).

* Water: Bring at least 4 big bottles or a filter to fill up at the trail.

* Estimated Time: Allow 4 hours there and 5 hours back. It's a long haul, but the views are worth every step.

* 4x4 Vehicle: The dirt road to the trailhead is bumpy, so make sure you’ve got the right vehicle

* Trail: Palisades Creek Trail to Rattlesnake Falls

... Read moreHey fellow adventurers! I wanted to add a few extra thoughts to make your trip to Rattlesnake Falls even safer and more enjoyable, especially since it's known as an infamous and challenging waterfall. When I planned my own journey to this incredible spot, roughly 100 miles from Sacramento, I realized that beyond the basic gear, there are some specific precautions worth considering for a truly remote and rugged trail like this. First off, let's talk about communications. While the article mentions the need for a 4x4 for certain parking, cell service is often non-existent in these remote areas. I highly recommend carrying a satellite communication device, like a Garmin inReach or a Zoleo. It’s a lifesaver for emergencies and allows you to check in with loved ones, providing peace of mind to everyone. Imagine discovering those pristine pools and breathtaking beauty, only to realize you can't share your location with anyone if something goes wrong. Better safe than sorry! Secondly, given the name 'Rattlesnake Falls,' it's wise to be prepared for potential wildlife encounters. I always wear sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots and long pants to protect against scrapes and potential bites. While encounters are rare if you stick to the trail and make noise, knowing basic snake safety is crucial. Give them space, never provoke them, and if bitten, stay calm and seek immediate medical attention via your satellite device. This trail is truly wild, and respecting its inhabitants is part of the adventure. Finally, enjoying the 'pristine pools' and the overall natural beauty responsibly is paramount. This area is incredibly delicate. I always pack out everything I pack in, including food scraps and even biodegradable waste like orange peels, which can take ages to decompose and attract wildlife. If you plan to swim in the pools, avoid using sunscreen with harmful chemicals that can contaminate the water. Opt for mineral-based or reef-safe options, or simply wear sun-protective clothing. Remember, we want future generations to be able to find this incredible beauty too. This isn't just a hike; it's an immersive experience in one of California's most stunning, yet demanding, natural wonders. Stay vigilant, stay prepared, and soak in every moment responsibly!
