Tips for Your Newly Neutered Pup!
You guys, it’s a whirlwind when you have to get your dog spayed or neutered. Whether or not you have experience, I hope my tips below help you!
BEFORE the procedure:
🐾 Follow ALL preop instructions!
This seems like a no-brainer, but when we are so invested in our daily routines it can be hard to remember when changes need to be made. Your vet team should prepare you with documentation - just read it!
🐾 Use your phone to help you!
Set up reminders for feeding, meds, etc. and then you have one less thing to actively think about. Be sure to keep detailed notes about amounts you need to distribute so your dog isn’t over medicated or over fed.
AFTER the procedure:
🐾 Follow ALL post op instructions!!
Again, this one seems intuitive, but the number one thing your pet needs is dedication to the plan.
🐾 Keep your dog protected - from themselves!
Monitor them closely for the 10-14 days they need to be protected from their fresh wounds. My dogs have always done well with cones (commonly called “e-collar”), but there are other options too! The Kong brand makes a soft, inflatable collar my corgi mix liked (but those offer the ability to be popped if your dog is clever enough!).
🐾 Check their wounds - they can’t!
I’ve never had a dog not let me take peels here and there. I’ve felt it’s important to lightly monitor their wounds on the off-chance there’s an adverse reaction. Of course, you can only do this when/if your pup is comfortable letting you look! I wouldn’t push them if they aren’t comfortable.
🐾 Love on them!
Their bodies are tired and they just had surgery. Love on them as much as you can and let them slow down when they’re recovering. They need snuggles, not struggles!
Note: I am not in veterinary medicine and this is not official medical advice. Please consult your pup’s vet team for official medical advice. 🫶
Neutering is an important procedure for your dog's health and behavior. Post-surgery, your pup will need extra attention and care. Here are some crucial steps to follow: 1. **Create a Safe Environment**: Ensure your home is a quiet and comfortable space where your dog can rest and recover without disturbances. 2. **Monitor Activity Levels**: Limit your dog's activity for the first few weeks to prevent any complications. Short, gentle walks on a leash are ideal during this period. 3. **Nutritional Needs**: Adjust your dog's diet as per your vet's recommendations to support recovery. Make sure they are hydrated and have access to fresh water at all times. 4. **Emotional Support**: Your pup may feel anxious post-surgery. Provide plenty of affection and reassurance to help ease their stress. Gentle petting and calm voices can help comfort them. 5. **Follow-Up Care**: Keep track of any follow-up appointments with the vet for stitches removal or check-ups. Prompt attention to any concerns that arise, such as excessive swelling or bleeding, is crucial. By closely adhering to these guidelines, you can contribute to your dog's successful recovery after neutering, promoting a healthy and happy life thereafter.
