The power of silence
Understanding the power of silence has been a transformative experience for me, especially when it comes to healing from people-pleasing tendencies and emotional struggles like hypervigilance and emotional flashbacks. Many women, myself included, grow up feeling unseen and consequently learn to love by overgiving — becoming caretakers and fixers not out of strength but from a deep longing for genuine connection and recognition. This overgiving often leads to a silent struggle where you end up pouring into others while your own needs remain unmet. Silence, in this context, isn’t just about the absence of sound; it’s about creating a space within ourselves to listen deeply, to notice our own pain and desires without distraction. Practicing silence allows you to tune into your emotions and recognize patterns like hypervigilance — where you’re constantly on edge, anticipating harm or rejection — and emotional flashbacks that bring past hurts into present moments. In my personal journey, embracing silence has meant practicing mindfulness and meditation, which helped me to witness my internal experiences without judgment. It required learning to say no and setting boundaries, shifting away from being the fixer for everyone else toward becoming my own caretaker. Working through people-pleasing recovery also involved therapy, where insight like the one in the shared quote resonated deeply, helping me understand the root of my behaviors and the real need behind them: to finally be seen and valued. For anyone dealing with similar struggles, consider silence as a healing practice. Use quiet moments to journal, meditate, or simply breathe and observe your feelings. This practice nurtures self-compassion and helps break the cycle of overgiving that often leads to burnout. Healing isn’t about becoming silent to the world but about finding your own inner voice and strength to show up authentically, even when no one else does. It’s a gentle but powerful journey toward emotional freedom and reclaiming your own worth.
