The Plus One review 🍅

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard my initial thoughts – a disappointing 3/10 for 'The Plus One.' But let's dive a little deeper into why, as someone who genuinely loves a good romantic comedy, this one just didn't hit the mark for me. I went in with high hopes, especially seeing names like Ashanti and Cedric the Entertainer attached, picturing a fun, heartwarming, and perhaps even laugh-out-loud experience. Unfortunately, those expectations weren't quite met. First off, the predictability. I know rom-coms often follow a formula, and that's usually part of their charm. We love seeing the 'will they/won't they' play out, the meet-cute, the inevitable misunderstanding, and the grand gesture. But with 'The Plus One,' it felt like I was watching a checklist being ticked off rather than a genuine story unfolding. Every plot twist, every character development, felt telegraphed miles in advance. There were no surprises, no moments that made me gasp or even just smile unexpectedly. It made the entire viewing experience feel a bit like I was just waiting for the inevitable rather than being immersed in the journey. Then there's the acting. While I adore talents like Ashanti and Cedric the Entertainer, and they certainly have their moments, the performances overall felt a bit… inconsistent. Sometimes it felt like the actors were trying their best with a script that didn't quite give them enough to work with, leading to some scenes feeling forced or lacking genuine emotion. The chemistry, which is absolutely vital in a rom-com, also seemed to fluctuate. There were flashes of potential, but they were often overshadowed by moments that didn't quite connect, leaving the central romance feeling less believable than I'd hoped. For me, a great rom-com makes you root for the characters, laugh with them, and maybe even shed a tear or two. 'The Plus One' just didn't quite manage to evoke those strong feelings. It felt like it played it too safe, missing opportunities to add depth to its characters or inject some much-needed originality into its storyline. If you're looking for a film to put on in the background while you're doing other things, it might suffice. But if you're like me and you cherish a rom-com that truly makes your heart flutter and gives you a good laugh, you might find yourself a little underwhelmed. I'd love to hear if anyone else felt the same way, or if I missed something wonderful in my viewing!
