Understanding Lighting Rendering Index (CRI)

CRI measures a light source's ability to reveal the true colors of objects compared to natural daylight. The higher the CRI, the more accurately colors are displayed. A low-CRI light can make spaces look flat, grey, and lifeless, while a high-CRI light enhances color richness, texture, and visual comfort.

Don't simply rely on the product packaging/printing, ask the lighting professional to test it out in front of you when viewing the fittings. Good lighting is not an expenses. It is an investment in how your space looks, feel and performs.

We believe in getting what you pay for because quality lighting makes all the differences.

... Read moreFrom my personal experience, understanding the Color Rendering Index (CRI) truly changed how I approach lighting in my home. Initially, I never paid much attention to the CRI rating on light bulbs, focusing mostly on brightness and color temperature. However, after noticing how dull and lifeless my living room looked compared to stores or showrooms, I started researching lighting quality. One key insight I discovered is that CRI measures how accurately a light source reveals the true colors of objects compared to natural daylight. For example, fruits under a light with a low CRI look washed out, which affects ambiance and even appetite. When I upgraded my bulbs to ones with a CRI of 90 or above, colors of my furniture, artworks, and even skin tones looked more vivid and natural. In different rooms, recommended CRI values can vary. For instance, living rooms and dining areas benefit from CRI ratings of 92 or higher because this enhances the richness of interior finishes and makes food more appetizing. Bedrooms and kitchens do well with CRI around 90, which helps with makeup application and accurate food color perception. Bathrooms require high CRI too, so what you see in the mirror matches natural light conditions. Another practical tip is not to solely rely on packaging claims. I learned it’s better to test the light fittings in your actual space or ask a professional to demonstrate how the light renders colors. Often, marketing information can be vague or misleading. The right lighting is an investment because quality lighting transforms a room’s feel and usability. Finally, good lighting design involves more than just CRI. You need to consider color temperature, beam angles, and layered lighting—combining ambient, task, and accent lighting to create depth and prevent flat, uneven illumination. Glare control is also critical for visual comfort. In summary, focusing on CRI helped me improve both the function and beauty of my home lighting. It’s about experiencing colors as close to their natural state as possible, making everyday environments more enjoyable and vibrant.
