Embarking on a basement remodeling project, especially transforming it into a personal speakeasy, is both challenging and rewarding. One key piece of advice I’ve learned is the importance of priming walls before painting. While it may seem tedious or unnecessary, priming actually saves paint and ensures a smoother, longer-lasting finish. Personally, I dislike the extra step, but the results are worth it, as it minimizes the number of paint coats needed and helps the color adhere better. In my project, I’m tackling everything mostly by myself during my school breaks, making time management crucial. Balancing DIY work with daily life can be tough, but seeing the bathroom come together and installing crown molding has been especially satisfying. It’s important to pace yourself and not rush; small, consistent progress leads to big transformations. One unexpected part of the process was dealing with remnants like tire tracks on the floor from moving materials. Cleaning and prepping the space thoroughly before starting ensures a cleaner work area and helps the finishes look their best. Also, there’s a real joy in sharing the journey with others—whether it’s through comments, following paint color decisions, or simply celebrating milestones like the ‘before and after’ shots. If you’re considering a similar project, my tip is to embrace the learning curve and know that doing it yourself not only saves money but adds personal value and pride to the space. Follow along for upcoming steps where the real excitement begins—choosing and applying the perfect colors that bring the speakeasy vibe to life!
