My first year as a designer battling imposter synd

The first 6 months at my dream design job were rough. I’d nod along in meetings while secretly Googling industry terms, rewrite Slack messages ten times before hitting send, and cry in the bathroom after presentations. Then my mentor gave me a reality check: “The difference between you and senior designers? They’ve just had more time to be wrong.”

1. Here’s what actually helped:

The “Done List”

Instead of obsessing over flaws, I started tracking small wins:

✓ Asked one “dumb” question

✓ Shared a work-in-progress (WIP) design, even a shaky one

✓ Spoke up in a standup meeting

2. The 3 Months “Clueless Clause”

I gave myself permission to:

- Not know every jargon term

- Ask for extra explanations

- Present messy first drafts without apology

3. Finding My Tribe

I teamed up with two other junior designers to create a safe space where we:

- Vent about the stress of feedback

- Share concepts that got rejected

- Celebrate tiny victories

My turning point is a senior designer admitted she still gets nervous presenting to leaders. That’s when it hit me, we all “fake it till we make it” as we grow into our roles. How do you tackle design insecurities? Anyone else have post-critique rituals to bounce back?

Back in the day (because I am an oldie) we had to write at least 5 positive notes and 5 criticism notes to each other in the office. and we were in a close spaces. It mostly started with pointing out the good and how to correct it. ot wasn't terrible but it was very repetitive and forcing. I hated it

Decide for yourself if the feedback is valid. Only listen to feedback where they give the solution for your problem. Criticism will never feel good, but it is good to improve.
