I'm an INFP and a sensitive person.
Since childhood I have also been very easily stressed out. When I have important things to do (or basically anything I have to do) I immediately get stressed. For example when I get a job (I occasionaly work as a substitute teacher) for even a day or two, I get anxious and stressed. I find it hard to relax while knowing I have something to do in near future. I have also been emplyed for longer times in my past and waking up for work morning after morning has been really exhausting. Of course my stress levels have decreased during longer employments, but they have not gone away entirely. I find it really frustrating to get stressed out of every little thing. It feels like for every one day of work (or for example visiting friends or just being away from home) I need at least 2 or 3 days off. Does anyone have the same problem and if so, have you got any advice on dealing with this overwhelming stress?
It's so validating to know I'm not alone in feeling this way! As an INFP and someone who identifies as a highly sensitive person (HSP), I've spent years trying to understand why I get so easily overwhelmed by stress, just like you described. It's truly one of the defining INFP personality type characteristics, this deep emotional processing and sensitivity to external stimuli. When I read about needing 2-3 days off after just one day of activity, it resonated deeply. For INFPs, it's not just about physical exhaustion; it's the mental and emotional energy depletion. We tend to absorb the emotions and energy of others, process everything deeply, and often overthink situations. This can lead to what feels like constant anxiety or INFP under stress, even when the task itself isn't inherently 'stressful' for others. This deep processing is also why sometimes INFP procrastination happens – the sheer thought of starting something can feel so daunting due to the anticipated emotional toll. I've learned that acknowledging this inherent INFP sensitive nature is the first step. It’s not a flaw; it's just how we're wired. When I'm INFP when stressed, I often feel completely drained, irritable, and tend to withdraw. It's like my internal battery just hits zero. For a long time, I blamed myself, thinking I wasn't strong enough, but understanding the INFP temperament helped me reframe it. One thing that has genuinely helped me is creating strict boundaries around my energy. For instance, I now schedule 'buffer days' after social events or demanding work periods. It's not being lazy; it's essential self-care that prevents me from reaching that breaking point. I also find connecting with nature incredibly grounding, or engaging in creative outlets like writing or drawing. These activities help process those intense emotions without external pressure. I also started paying more attention to my physical well-being. I remember seeing a picture of a medicine container recently, and it made me think about how many of us might be reaching for something to calm our nerves. While sometimes necessary, I've found that simple things like mindful breathing, herbal teas, or even just taking a few minutes to be completely alone in a quiet space can be powerful. It's about finding those small rituals that help you feel less stressed over every little thing. Another practical tip I've embraced is learning to say 'no' without guilt. As an emotionally sensitive person, I used to feel responsible for everyone's feelings, leading me to overcommit. Now, I remind myself that protecting my peace allows me to show up better for the things that truly matter. It’s about being compassionate with yourself and understanding that your capacity isn't limitless. Creating a calming home environment, even if it's just a cozy corner, can also be a sanctuary when the world feels too loud. Remember, your sensitivity is also a superpower, allowing for deep empathy and creativity – it just needs careful management. What small steps do you take to recharge your own INFP battery when stress takes over?
