Does the man pay for the first date?

So here’s a question, if a girl asks a guy out, does she have to pay for the first date? Cause I just had the most awkward night ever. I asked this guy I matched with to grab drinks at a bar. We had 3 each, laughed a ton, and the convo flowed. But when the bill came? He pushed it toward me like “Wait, you’re the one who asked me out, right?”

I was shocked, isn’t the first date usually split? He kept hedging, making excuses about “fairness” while I sat there cringing. We had a good time, but no romantic spark. Now I’m overthinking if I owe him money just cause I initiated.

Like, if he didn’t wanna pay, why say yes? It’s not like I tricked him into hanging out! Now I’m stuck wondering should I Venmo him half to avoid drama or stand my ground cause his pushiness killed any vibe? When you’re the one who asked? Who actually should pay here?

... Read moreWhen it comes to first dates, the question of who should pay often sparks debate and confusion. Traditional dating norms used to suggest that the man always covered the bill, especially if he was the one who initiated the date. However, dating culture has evolved, and many people now expect to split the cost fairly or share expenses regardless of who asked whom out. In your case, asking the guy out reversed the usual dynamic, but the expectation that he would automatically pay persisted on his end. Many people believe that whoever initiates a date should be prepared to pay, but there is no universally enforced rule. Splitting the bill, especially on a casual outing like grabbing drinks, is often seen as fair and modern etiquette. That said, feelings and social expectations also come into play. Your discomfort is understandable since you felt the date was enjoyable and sincere, but his insistence on fairness felt more like a pushy stance rather than a mutual agreement. Some suggest discussing payment before meeting up to avoid misunderstandings. Venmo or similar payment apps make splitting bills easier today, so offering to split or cover your share also signals good faith and can prevent drama. Overall, the best approach might be to treat date payments as a shared responsibility, especially when traditional gender roles don’t strictly apply. Clear communication beforehand can help set expectations, so neither party feels awkward or taken advantage of. Dating should be about connection, and money talk, while important, shouldn’t kill the vibe or lead to unnecessary stress. Your story highlights modern dating realities—respect, fairness, and honesty are key, regardless of who made the first move.

I think that whenever you go out on a date, whether you have asked the person out or not you should always be prepared to pay for your own food just to be safe. Dating 101 you should never go out without having your own money.
