Ways to advocate for yourself when being evaluated for labor!
It’s important to note, however, that I def do recognize that you can do all of these things and still get dismissed unfortunately 😔 I hope this helps! 🤗
Advocating for yourself during labor can feel overwhelming, especially when you're in discomfort and under stress. One of the most valuable tools I found was to clearly communicate my concerns using phrases like "I'm concerned about..." which signals to healthcare providers that your worries are serious and deserve attention. Taking photos of monitoring strips or any visible signs during labor can serve as a helpful reference when discussing your progress or symptoms with your care team. Another key strategy is to request a recheck if you feel your labor is progressing faster than expected or if your symptoms worsen—asking for a reassessment in 1-2 hours can make a big difference. It’s also helpful to share your birth history, especially if you have had a speedy birth or endured lengthy travel during labor, as this information might influence how the staff prioritize your care. Before labor starts, identifying a support person and ensuring they understand your wishes gives you an added layer of advocacy and emotional comfort. This person can speak up on your behalf and help communicate your concerns to medical staff if needed. Lastly, keeping the practice hotline number handy for any doubts or urgent queries is a simple yet effective way to stay connected with professionals who know your case. While advocacy cannot guarantee outcomes, these proactive steps can empower you and contribute to a more attentive labor experience.
