Late night reads 📚
Being in emergency response is not for the week, but neither is shift work and when you combine the two, you get what I’m convinced are permanently exhausted and fully functioning gremlins (me). The night to day switch has been surprisingly easy lately, but this day to night (even with trying to nap) has been for the birds… finished Good Girl, Bad Blood and going to move onto the next one. Only about 4.5 hours til I can go to bed 😴
Working night shifts as an emergency dispatcher can be an intense juggling act, especially when combined with the unpredictability and demands of emergency response. Over time, I've found that maintaining alertness during overnight hours takes more than just short naps—it requires mental engagement and small escapes. One of my favorite ways to recharge mentally during these demanding shifts is by diving into thrilling novels. After finishing "Good Girl, Bad Blood," I picked up Mary Kubica's "It’s Not Her," which is a gripping read that helps me stay awake and focused, even when exhaustion peaks. Books like these not only provide entertainment but also a welcome distraction from the nonstop pace of dispatch work. Another key to managing the day-to-night switch involves creating a routine that signals to my body that rest is coming soon. For example, limiting screen exposure hours before I nap, using blackout curtains, and incorporating relaxing activities such as reading help ease the transition to sleep after my shift ends. If you're in the emergency services field or any other shift work role, I highly recommend finding a genre or series that captivates you. It's a small but effective strategy to combat the mental toll of irregular hours and maintain a bit of normalcy during those up-all-night scenarios. Books can be a comforting companion to the unique lifestyle that shift work demands. Nighttime reading has genuinely become a lifeline for me, converting the long, quiet hours into moments of adventure and mental escape. For anyone struggling with sleep schedule disruptions, consider pairing your shift work with an engaging read—it might just transform your nights and keep exhaustion at bay.
