Where I go eat in Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh's culinary scene is as vibrant and historic as the city itself, and I love discovering new spots! Beyond just a list, I wanted to share a bit more about what makes these places special and help you navigate your own food adventure here. When I'm craving a truly authentic Scottish vibe, The White Hart Inn in Grassmarket is a must-visit. This place, with its history dating back to 1516 (as the OCR picked up!), just oozes character. It’s perfect for a hearty pub lunch – think classic fish and chips, or even a traditional haggis if you're feeling adventurous. The atmosphere is always buzzing, especially in the evenings. Similarly, The Bailie Bar offers another fantastic pub experience, great for a relaxed meal and a local ale. For something a bit more upscale or a special occasion, Number One at The Balmoral Hotel truly lives up to its name. It’s an exquisite dining experience, and Bar Prince, also within The Balmoral, is fantastic for sophisticated cocktails and light bites. Tigerlily on George Street is another stylish option, known for its chic decor and lively atmosphere, making it ideal for a glamorous dinner or drinks with friends. If you're exploring the historic Royal Mile area, Deacon’s House Cafe on Lawnmarket is a wonderful stop for a coffee and a scone or a light lunch. It's got that cozy, independent cafe feel that I adore. And across the street from The Bailie Bar, I always make a point to stop at Joelato. Their artisan gelato is simply incredible – the perfect sweet treat after a day of sightseeing. One unique spot I always recommend is Makars Mash Bar (sometimes seen as Makers Mash Bar in searches, but it's Makars!). Their entire concept revolves around gourmet mash and delicious toppings – it’s comfort food elevated! It’s a fun, casual place close to Bank Street, right by the Royal Mile. Brewhemia, located on Market St, is another massive, vibrant venue that's great for both food and drinks, with a fantastic selection of beers and a lively atmosphere, often with live music. My tip for dining in Edinburgh, especially for popular spots like these, is to book ahead if you can, particularly for dinner or weekend lunches. Many places, especially in the city centre, get very busy. Don't be afraid to try some local specialties – beyond what I've listed, Edinburgh has a fantastic range of international cuisine too.
