Hitting redial...softly, and with growing fear in his voice, "please, please, answer baby." then he finally hears....
“Hey, honey, what’s...”
“Oh, thank God you are okay. Where is Lily?”
“Why, what happened?”
Joe shouts, “WHERE IS SHE?”
“Sleeping, she is taking a nap. What is going on?”
“Go check on her, NOW!!! I just turned up the drive, (which their drive is 4.5 miles long up the mountain.) I’m 5 minutes. Go now Lizzy. NOW!”
Lisa stood in the center of the kitchen, one hand still holding her phone, the other searching blindly for something to hold onto. Knowing where Joe was coming from and who he was talking to, her eyes opened wide, “Caldwell,” She’s trembling as all the old terror is coming back, cold and precise.
The phone, slowly slipping out of her hand, crashes to the floor. “Nooo no no no no no noooo.” Her heart had just been ripped out of her chest.
Every instinct propelled her down the narrow hallway to Lily’s room, a space that was usually vibrant and alive with laughter. At Lily’s door, she doesn’t even pause, just kicks it open, heart pounding out of her chest.
The bed was empty, perfectly made, the sheets untouched.
“Lily sweetheart, where are you? Lily?” she calls out, desperation leaking into her tone. She felt an icy grip around her heart as she spun around, her eyes scanning the room for any clues. Stepping closer to the window......It was open. Panic surged through her veins as she yelled into the vastness outside, Lily!”
There was no answer.
She tore through the rest of the house, checking every nook and cranny, closets, under cabinets where she used to play hide and seek. “Where are you baby?” she whispered, tears streaming down her face as hope began to slip through her fingers like sand.
Returning to Lily’s room, she saw a small piece of paper resting on the pillow. Her hands shaking, she picks up the note, it read, ‘I Took Yours.’ but before she could understand the words, her eyes caught sight of Lily’s favorite one-eyed rabbit, perched there as if it had been left behind on purpose.
She felt her world crumble.
Grabbing the rabbit, she collapsed to the floor, letting out a heart-wrenching scream, Noooooo,” The sound reverberated off the walls, a raw expression of anguish that shook the very foundation of the house.
Just then, the wail of sirens shattered the stillness. Deputies Cooper, Bradford and McFarland pull in with Troopers Olsen and Mathews following. Joe was seconds behind with the promise of help, yet it also marked that her baby had been taken right from under her nose.
Lisa had entered a nightmare from which there was no waking.
Unable to breathe, she forces herself up and runs out the door holding Lily’s rabbit, running straight into Joe’s arms, saying, “He took her, He took her, Joe. Lily’s gone.”
She hands him the note. He reads it, rereads it, and hands it to McFarland saying, “bag it, get prints and get the FBI here, tell them it was... Oh my God, Elias took our baby girl.”
Joe's arms were still around Lisa when she let out another blood-curdling scream as her body went limp. He pulled her closer to him but as he lifted her up, he sank down to his knees, still holding her, both lost and crying.
No one knew what to do for them.
