Life Lessons, Rock Climbing and Sacred Play, Oh My

@Monique Pagán and I recently spent some intentional time together—something we prioritize to stay connected as long-distance friends. In addition to filming our podcast, we created intentional time for sacred play by doing things we both enjoy.

Rock climbing is something Monique loves, but it was a new experience for me—at least in this capacity. Luckily, we were in Alexandria, VA, home to Sportrock Climbing Centers, and our only intention that day was simple: to have fun.

🎒 The Belay System

In climbing, your belay partner catches you when you fall. It’s a practice of trust and reliance. Just like in life, knowing someone has your back allows you to take risks, push boundaries, and reach higher.

🧩 Patience & Problem-Solving

Every route is a puzzle, a unique challenge. Climbing teaches you to slow down, stay present, and figure out your next move—one step at a time. Isn’t life the same?

🎈 The Power of Play

Climbing isn’t just about reaching the top. It’s about the journey. Sacred play brings back that childlike sense of fun, joy, and discovery we often lose as adults.

🤝 Support at Every Stage

From belayers to cheering friends, support surrounds you. In climbing and in life, people are there to lift you up, catch you when you fall, and cheer you on as you grow.

🏔️ The Summit Is Sweet, but the Journey Is Sweeter

As we reflected on our time in sacred play, a few powerful life lessons emerged—ones that will stay with us long after the climb. In this video, we share just a few of those insights, and we can’t wait to share more.

Through rock climbing, we discovered trust, resilience, and the beauty of intentional connection. Whether on the wall or in life, it’s all about showing up for each other, embracing the process, and enjoying the journey. 🌟

Engaging in this adventurous activity fosters a growth mindset, allowing individuals to embrace obstacles as opportunities for personal development. Climbing requires problem-solving skills and patience, mirroring life's unpredictability. Just like each climbing route presents a unique challenge, life continuously tests our resilience and adaptability. Moreover, the concept of 'sacred play' encourages individuals to reconnect with their inner child, often lost in adult responsibilities. This playful approach enhances creativity, nurtures well-being, and strengthens relationships by forging deeper, intentional connections with friends and family. As you climb both figuratively and literally, remember the importance of support systems. Belayers are there to catch you during falls, just as friends and loved ones provide emotional support during life's tough climbs. Take a moment to reflect on your own life lessons. What challenges have shaped you? How can you integrate sacred play into your daily routine? Embracing these principles could lead to more fulfilling experiences and stronger bonds with those around you.
