Giving our jellycat a bath🫧
I know how precious our Jellycat friends are, and keeping them clean and cuddly is super important! Whether it's from daily snuggles, an accidental spill, or just needing a refresh, giving your Jellycat a bath can be a little daunting. But don't worry, I've personally tried a few methods and found what works best to keep them looking brand new without losing their signature softness. First off, can Jellycats be washed? Absolutely, yes! Most Jellycat plush toys are designed to be quite durable, but they do require a gentle touch. My go-to method is always hand washing, especially for those with delicate features or accessories. It's truly the safest way to ensure they maintain their shape and fluffiness for years to come. Here’s my step-by-step guide for giving your Jellycat a spa day, just like I do for mine: What You'll Need: A clean basin or sink Lukewarm water (important: not hot!) Mild, gentle detergent (I love using baby shampoo or a wool wash – anything harsh can damage the fibers) A soft cloth or sponge for spot cleaning Several clean, dry towels Optional: A mesh laundry bag (if considering machine wash) Hand Washing Method (My Preferred & Recommended Way): Spot Clean First: If your Jellycat has specific dirty spots or stains, tackle those first. Dampen a soft cloth with a tiny bit of detergent and gently blot or rub the affected area. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, as this can push the stain deeper or damage the plush. Prepare the Bath: Fill your clean basin or sink with lukewarm water. Add a very small amount of your mild detergent – a little goes a long way! Swish it around to create a gentle, bubbly mixture. Gentle Soak & Squeeze: Submerge your Jellycat into the water. Gently squeeze and release the plush to allow the soapy water to work its way through the fibers. Treat it with care, almost like you're hand-washing a delicate sweater. Avoid twisting, stretching, or pulling. Rinse, Rinse, Rinse: This step is crucial! Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water. Gently squeeze your Jellycat under the running water until all the detergent is rinsed out. You’ll know it’s clean when the water squeezed out is clear and there are no more suds. Soap residue can make the fur feel stiff. Remove Excess Water: Once thoroughly rinsed, gently squeeze out as much water as you can without wringing or twisting it. Then, lay your Jellycat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel up with the Jellycat inside and press firmly to absorb even more moisture. You might need to repeat this with a fresh, dry towel or two. Air Dry is Key: This is arguably the most important part for maintaining softness and shape. Lay your Jellycat flat on a clean, dry towel in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources (like radiators or hair dryers) as these can cause fading, damage the fibers, or even melt them. Gently fluff and reposition your Jellycat every few hours as it dries. Depending on its size, this process can take anywhere from 1 to 3 days. Patience here will pay off with a perfectly soft, fluffy result! Can You Machine Wash a Jellycat? (Use with Caution!) While hand washing is my top recommendation, some people do machine wash their Jellycats. If you choose this method, please proceed with extreme caution and only for Jellycats without delicate attachments or very stiff parts. Always check the care label first! Place your Jellycat inside a mesh laundry bag to protect it from agitation. Use a delicate or gentle cycle with cold water and a very mild detergent. NEVER put it in a tumble dryer with heat! This can permanently damage the fur and stuffing. Always air dry as described above. Tips for Maintaining Softness & Fluffiness: After your Jellycat is completely dry, you can gently brush its fur with a soft-bristled brush (like a baby brush) to help restore its original fluffiness. Don't wash too frequently; spot cleaning is often enough for minor messes. By following these steps, you can keep your beloved Jellycat looking, feeling, and smelling fresh and clean, ready for many more years of cuddles! It’s a little effort, but totally worth it for our cherished companions.
