Onion Shampoo for Hair Growth? 🧅🌿

I know… onion shampoo sounds a little suspicious at first. But onions are naturally rich in sulfur, which can help support stronger hair and healthier follicles. This formula also includes rosemary, which is known for helping stimulate the scalp, and biotin, a vitamin many people use to support thicker, healthier-looking hair.

The Natural Sant Onion, Rosemary & Biotin Shampoo & Treatment feels super conditioning and restorative. My scalp feels refreshed and my hair feels softer after washing.

And before anyone asks… no, your hair does NOT smell like onions. 😅

If your hair has been dealing with shedding, thinning, or stress, this might be a good addition to your hair care routine.

... Read moreSo, you've heard about onion for hair growth, right? Like many of you, I've always been fascinated by natural remedies, and the idea of using something as common as an onion for healthier hair growth definitely piqued my interest. While I've found a fantastic product that makes it super easy (which I talked about above!), I totally get that a lot of us love to go the DIY route. So, if you're curious about how to harness the power of onions right in your own kitchen, let me share what I've learned about making your own onion juice or oil for hair! The reason onions are such a big deal in the hair world boils down to their rich sulfur content. Sulfur is a crucial component of keratin, the protein that makes up our hair. It helps strengthen hair strands, promotes collagen production for healthy new growth, and can even improve blood circulation to the scalp. This is exactly what those fancy shampoos are trying to deliver, but you can get a dose of it naturally too. DIY Onion Juice for Hair Growth: A Simple Guide Making your own onion juice is surprisingly straightforward. Here’s how I (or my friends who are DIY enthusiasts!) typically do it: What you'll need: 1-2 medium-sized red onions (they’re often preferred for their higher sulfur content) A blender or grater A fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth A bowl for collecting the juice Optional: a few drops of essential oil (like rosemary or lavender) to help with the smell. The Process: Peel and Chop: Remove the outer skin from the onions and chop them into small pieces. The smaller the pieces, the easier they'll blend. Blend: Put the chopped onions into your blender. Add a tiny splash of water (just a tablespoon or two) if needed to get the blender going, but try to keep it as concentrated as possible. Blend until you get a smooth paste. Strain: Place the fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a bowl. Pour the onion paste into it and press down firmly to extract as much juice as possible. You should end up with a good amount of fresh onion juice. How to Apply Your DIY Onion Juice: Once you have your precious onion juice, it's time for application! Scalp Focus: This is primarily a scalp treatment. Dip a cotton ball into the juice or use a dropper to apply it directly to your scalp. Massage: Gently massage your scalp with your fingertips for 5-10 minutes. This helps the juice penetrate and stimulates blood flow. Leave It On: Leave the onion juice on your scalp for about 30 minutes to an hour. If you're new to this, start with 30 minutes to see how your scalp reacts. Rinse & Wash: Rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water, then follow up with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. You might need to shampoo twice to completely get rid of any lingering onion scent. Adding a few drops of essential oil to the juice or your final rinse can also help mask the smell! Taking it a Step Further: DIY Onion Oil If you prefer an oil treatment, you can also infuse onion into a carrier oil. This is great for a more intensive treatment and can be stored for a bit longer. What you'll need: Onion paste (from 1-2 onions, as prepared above, but don't strain the juice yet) 1/2 cup of a carrier oil like coconut oil, olive oil, or castor oil. The Process: Heat Gently: In a pan, heat your chosen carrier oil on low heat. Add Onion Paste: Carefully add the onion paste to the warm oil. Simmer: Let it simmer on very low heat for about 10-15 minutes, or until the onion pieces turn slightly brown and crispy. Don't let it burn! Cool & Strain: Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely. Once cool, strain the oil through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to separate the oil from the onion solids. Store: Store your homemade onion oil in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Using DIY Onion Oil: Apply the onion oil to your scalp and hair, massaging it in. You can leave it on for a few hours or even overnight (just make sure to protect your pillow with a towel!). Then, wash it out thoroughly. Remember, whether you're using a product like the shampoo I love or going the DIY route, consistency is key. Results won't happen overnight, but with regular use, you might just see those healthier, stronger strands you’re looking for. It's all about nurturing that healthy scalp for healthier hair growth!

I appreciate the info. Do you have biotin by itself? What’s a good brand that I can purchase? I am very allergic to sulfur so I cannot do the onions.

Thanks for sharing. I had a vitamin deficiency when I was pregnant. Basically, I almost threw up all the vitamins in my body so a lot of my hair fell out. I’ve been trying to find products to help my hair grow back faster.
