... Read moreI recently had the most incredible experience visiting Watkins Glen State Park, and I just have to share why it truly is, as the OCR highlights, the 'Most beautiful state park in New York!' If you're planning a trip to the Finger Lakes region, this park should be at the very top of your list. One of the questions I often see is 'When is the best time to visit Watkins Glen State Park?' From my personal experience, late spring (May-June) or early fall (September-October) are absolutely magical. In spring, the waterfalls are at their fullest after the snowmelt, and the foliage in fall is just spectacular. Summer is beautiful too, but it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends. If you go in summer, try to arrive early in the morning to beat the rush and secure parking. So, 'what to do in Watkins Glen NY' once you're there? The absolute highlight is the Gorge Trail. It's an easy to moderate hike that takes you past 19 stunning waterfalls. You'll walk under, over, and behind waterfalls like Rainbow Falls and Central Cascade – it’s an immersive experience you won't forget. Don't worry about getting lost; the trail is well-maintained and clearly marked. I loved how you could feel the mist from the falls on your face! For those looking for a different perspective or a slightly less strenuous walk, the Indian Trail runs along the rim above the gorge, offering different scenic overlooks. Beyond the main trails, there are plenty of 'things to do around Watkins Glen.' The charming village itself has cute shops and restaurants, and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is right on your doorstep. After a day of hiking, exploring a local winery is the perfect way to relax. For unique attractions, consider taking a boat tour on Seneca Lake or visiting the Watkins Glen International Raceway if you're a motorsports fan. A few practical tips for your visit: Wear comfortable, waterproof shoes! The Gorge Trail can be wet and slippery in places due to the constant spray from the falls. Also, bring a camera – you'll want to capture those 'Watkins Glen State Park photos.' I'd also recommend bringing a light jacket, even on a warm day, as it can be cooler in the gorge. Parking is available, but as I mentioned, it fills up fast during peak season. There's a small entrance fee, but it's absolutely worth it for the stunning natural beauty you get to experience. This park isn't just a destination; it's an adventure for anyone who loves hiking and the great outdoors!
