Empowering ourselves can save lives, including our own
Living in today’s world, I’ve found that empowering ourselves to act can truly save lives—not just of people, but of our planet as well. One powerful way I’ve experienced this firsthand is through the use of on-demand apps designed to rescue surplus food and redistribute it to those in need or prevent it from going to landfill. For example, Food Rescue US connects volunteers who act as "food runners" to claim excess food from restaurants or grocery stores and deliver it to homeless shelters or food pantries. This creates a meaningful way to directly impact local hunger while tackling waste. Apps like Olio provide an incredible hyper-local system where users can list extra food, clothing, and household items. Neighbors or volunteers can then coordinate pickups, helping to build a community around sharing and reducing landfill contributions. I personally love how simple it is to list items and coordinate on-demand collections. Another app, Too Good To Go, uses a gig-economy model focused on rescuing unsold bakery or restaurant food through heavily discounted sales, giving consumers affordable access while preventing waste. Freecycle and Trash Nothing add a layer of free community exchange by enabling users to post items and arrange peer-to-peer pickups, extending the life of goods that would otherwise be thrown away. From volunteering as a "food runner" to simply listing surplus items at home, these platforms empower ordinary people to make an outsized impact. They also highlight the importance of leveraging existing infrastructure rather than "reinventing the wheel"—making it easier for many to join in. In my experience, participating in these programs not only helps reduce environmental harm but builds a sense of connection and purpose. It’s empowering to know that by simply using technology and community coordination, we can combat waste, support those facing food insecurity, and contribute positively to our local environment and well-being.
