What we’re not gonna do is treat Gen Z like Millennials and perpetually infantilize them while they’re pushing 30 — this is why terms like “baby witch” have never sat right with me when the word “amateur” or “novice” was right there — I’m not saying children should not have public spaces, including on the Internet, where they can interact and where it is safe for them to be, I’m just saying the main users of the app/site are Gen Z, it was their app first and they are legally adults and have been for a while, which means legally adult things are going to come up because it’s literally the lived experience of the majority of users on this app
From my experience navigating social apps, I've noticed a significant shift in the type of content as Gen Z users have matured. Many apps originally designed for teenagers now host more adult-oriented content, reflecting the users who grew up with them. This evolution is natural—considering these platforms were 'their app first', it’s expected that discussions and themes will mature alongside their audience. Referring to Gen Z with terms like “baby witch” or infantilizing their interests can seem dismissive or out of touch. It’s crucial to recognize that while children should have safe spaces online, the dominant user base of many apps are legally adults with adult experiences. This means apps once seen as teen spaces will inevitably reflect more adult conversations and realities—something I’ve personally seen sparks debates about content appropriateness and platform responsibility. Regarding the app dynamics, it’s relevant to acknowledge how cultural moments, like the pandemic, have influenced user behavior and content proliferation. Apps popular before significant societal shifts, like the pandemic over half a decade ago, now carry diverse content representing the broad spectrum of Gen Z experiences—both youthful and adult. Ultimately, respecting Gen Z as adults with their own distinct identity rather than as extended Millennials or perpetual adolescents helps foster more authentic and meaningful online interactions.
