high functioning....high masking ✨

For years, I couldn't understand why certain things felt so much harder for me than they seemed to be for everyone else.

The exhaustion after social situations. The constant masking. The sensory overload. The need for routine while my ADHD craved novelty. The intense focus, deep empathy, and overwhelming emotions. None of it made sense until I learned more about autism.

High functioning autism is often invisible, but that doesn't mean the challenges aren't real. The strengths are just as real.

This is one of the reasons I created PATCHIES. My goal is to help people feel seen, understood, and supported through honest conversations, education, and practical tools for neurodivergent minds.

If this graphic helped you understand autism a little better, share it with someone who might need it. 💛

... Read moreLiving with high-functioning autism often means navigating a world that may not immediately recognize the difficulties you face. From my own experience, the exhaustion after social interactions is deeply real. Simple things like small talk or noisy environments can drain your energy, pushing you into a state of sensory overload that others might not notice. Couple that with the constant effort to mask or camouflage your true feelings and behaviors just to fit in, and it’s no wonder burnout and anxiety can follow. One of the more surprising aspects I've learned is how much routine feels necessary for stability, even as ADHD craves novelty. This paradox creates a push and pull that is both exhausting and confusing. Despite these challenges, many with high-functioning autism possess incredible strengths—deep empathy, laser-sharp attention to detail, and creative problem-solving skills that lead to innovative ideas and unique perspectives. The PATCHIES community resonates strongly because it recognizes these invisible struggles alongside the visible talents. It's encouraging to find a space that values honesty, loyalty, and a strong sense of justice, all of which are often pronounced traits in neurodivergent individuals. From personal experience, what helps most is open communication rooted in patience and acceptance. Clear routines and respecting sensory preferences make a profound difference. Sometimes, just knowing someone sees you and understands your unique way of experiencing the world can be a powerful source of support and belonging. For those who feel invisible in their challenges or misunderstood in their strengths, embracing the concept that high-functioning autism is 'different, not less' helps shift the narrative. It's about creating connection through awareness and celebrating neurodiversity—not just tolerating it. Sharing resources like the PATCHIES graphics can foster greater understanding and compassion, which ultimately benefits everyone in the community.
