Is gaming stemming? ✨

Did you know that gaming can be a form of stimming?

For many autistic and ADHD gamers, repetitive movements during gameplay aren't distractions. They're ways to regulate the nervous system, improve focus, process emotions, and stay engaged.

Stimming can look different for everyone. It might be tapping your fingers, bouncing your leg, rocking, clicking a fidget, adjusting your grip, humming, or even repeating certain in-game movements.

There's nothing "wrong" with stimming. It's a natural form of self-regulation, and for many people, gaming creates a safe space where those behaviors happen without even thinking about them.

The more we understand neurodivergent experiences, the less we judge and the more we support.

💛 Do you notice yourself stimming while you game? What does it look like for you?

... Read moreAs someone who often finds comfort in gaming, I've noticed the subtle but meaningful ways it can serve as a form of stimming. Stimming, or self-stimulatory behavior, involves repetitive movements or sounds that help regulate the nervous system, especially in autistic and ADHD individuals. Gaming naturally incorporates many of these behaviors—whether it’s rapidly tapping buttons, fidgeting with the controller, humming, or repeating specific in-game actions—which can unknowingly assist in managing sensory overwhelm and emotional processing. In my experience, these repetitive motions while gaming provide a calming effect that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. For example, the tactile feedback from controller buttons or the rhythm of certain in-game tasks helps maintain focus and reduces feelings of irritability or restlessness. Sometimes, these stimming actions also create a sense of control and predictability in an otherwise chaotic neurodivergent world. It's important to recognize that stimming through gaming is not just a distraction but a valuable coping mechanism. Taking regular breaks to check in on how you feel physically and emotionally can further enhance the benefits. This balance ensures that gaming remains a supportive environment rather than a source of stress. Moreover, understanding and embracing these behaviors can reduce judgment from others and foster a more inclusive space for neurodivergent gamers. If you find yourself tapping, rocking, or making repetitive sounds while playing, know that you’re engaging in a natural way to stay centered and focused. Embracing gaming as stimming has personally helped me stay calm and connected, making the experience both enjoyable and therapeutic.
