This is why your walls are peeling, flaking and bubbling.
From my experience working on home renovation projects, one of the most frustrating problems is dealing with walls where paint starts peeling, flaking, or bubbling. These issues don’t just affect aesthetics; they often point to underlying problems that can worsen over time. A primary cause I’ve found is moisture. Whether from leaks, high humidity, or poor ventilation, moisture trapped beneath the paint layer causes it to lose adhesion and separate from the wall surface. This leads to bubbling and peeling. To avoid this, ensuring walls are thoroughly dry before painting is critical. Using a dehumidifier or improving airflow can also help reduce moisture buildup. Another common factor is inadequate surface preparation. Skipping steps like cleaning, sanding, and priming can leave dust, dirt, or loose particles that prevent paint from bonding properly. In one of my recent projects, properly sanding and using a quality primer made all the difference in achieving a durable finish. Additionally, incompatible paints or applying new paint over old paint without proper surface treatment can trigger flaking. For example, applying latex paint over oil-based paint without sanding can cause poor adhesion. Always checking paint compatibility and following manufacturer instructions helps prevent this. Lastly, environmental factors such as extreme temperatures or direct sunlight during application can affect how paint dries and bonds. Painting in ideal weather conditions is another key step. Addressing these causes—moisture control, surface prep, paint choice, and timing—takes effort but the result is long-lasting, smooth walls that keep your home looking fresh and well-maintained.
