After trying for ages to get Tufted Titmice to nest in my backyard, I finally cracked the code! It wasn't just about putting any birdhouse out; it was about the right nest box and precise placement. Choosing the Perfect Home for Them Tufted Titmice are quite particular, so selecting or building the right nest box is step one. You’ll want one made of untreated, natural wood like cedar or pine, as these materials offer excellent insulation against temperature fluctuations and allow for necessary breathability. Avoid plastic or metal boxes, which can overheat or become too cold. The internal dimensions should ideally be around 4x4 inches for the floor, with a depth of about 8 to 10 inches. The most crucial feature is the entrance hole: it should be precisely 1 1/4 inches in diameter. This specific size is perfect for titmice but too small for larger, more aggressive cavity nesters like starlings. Don't forget small ventilation holes near the top and drainage holes at the bottom to keep the interior healthy and dry. Location, Location, Location! This is where many people, myself included, often go wrong initially. I found that placing the nest box about 5 to 15 feet high on a sturdy tree or post works wonders. It’s best to choose a quiet, somewhat shaded area of your yard, away from high foot traffic or busy areas. Make sure the entrance hole faces away from prevailing winds and direct afternoon sun to prevent overheating. Predator Protection is Key Unfortunately, squirrels, raccoons, snakes, and even house cats can be a significant threat to nesting birds. I strongly recommend adding a predator baffle – a metal cone or stovepipe guard – below the nest box. This simple addition has saved countless clutches in my yard. Mounting the box on a smooth metal pole rather than directly on a tree can also help prevent climbing predators from reaching the entrance. If mounting on a tree, ensure there are no branches directly accessible to the entrance hole from above or the side. Maintaining Their Abode Once nesting season is definitively over (usually late summer to early fall), it’s important to clean out the nest box. I always wait until I’m absolutely sure the birds have moved on and won't be returning. Simply remove the old nest material – they won't reuse it – and give the box a good scrub with a brush and warm water (no harsh chemicals or soap!).
