She thinks she’s helping…

I once experienced a similar situation where my cat, much like Harper in the story, decided that the best place to rest during my work was directly on top of my papers and laptop. It’s almost as if they think they are helping by being present, but really they are demanding attention and affection. Pets like cats and dogs have a natural tendency to seek warmth, comfort, and closeness to their owners. For cats, in particular, sitting on top of objects we are focused on (books, laptops, papers) is a way to connect with us and be part of our world. Even though it can be frustrating when you’re trying to concentrate, these moments offer an opportunity to pause, enjoy some pet interaction, and maybe even get inspired by their playful spirit. In my experience, setting up a designated cozy spot for your pet near your workspace can help them feel included without interfering too much. Giving them a special blanket or bed close enough so they can see you tends to reduce the likelihood of them occupying your keyboard or documents. Also, short breaks to pet or play with them can make a big difference for both your focus and your pet’s happiness. So, while it might feel like your pet is disrupting your 'zine' or work, it’s important to remember that their presence promotes emotional well-being. Embracing these cute interruptions, like Harper’s choice to lay right on everything, can bring warmth and joy to your creative process.
