... Read moreHey everyone! I'm so excited to share a bit more about my current digital art project: a work-in-progress sketch of Viktor from Arcane. It's truly a labor of love, and I've been pouring my heart into capturing his complex character. I started this piece wanting to really dive deep into his expression, as the OCR notes, that 'somber expression' and 'melancholic mood' are what I aimed for. Getting that right in a close-up digital sketch is both challenging and incredibly rewarding! When I approach a character like Viktor, especially from a show as visually stunning as Arcane, I always begin with a strong focus on the initial line work. For those wondering 'how to draw Viktor Arcane,' I recommend starting with basic shapes to establish proportion, then gradually refining your lines. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; that's what the 'work-in-progress' stage is all about! I usually do several rough passes, adjusting his facial structure, the fall of his long hair, and the angle of his gaze until it feels just right. One of the most crucial elements for me in this piece, and something I know many artists struggle with, is 'Arcane shading.' The show has such a unique, painterly style, and translating that into a digital sketch can be tricky. My personal strategy is to start with grayscale, as you can see in this WIP. By focusing purely on values—the lights and darks—you can build a really strong foundation for your rendering. I use soft brushes for gradual transitions and harder edges to define features, especially around his closed eyes and downturned mouth, which the OCR picked up on. Layering is key here; I build up the shading gradually, thinking about how light would fall on his face and accentuate his pensive mood. What I love about creating a 'Viktor Arcane close-up' is the opportunity to convey so much emotion through subtle details. Every stroke, every shadow, contributes to the story I'm trying to tell about his character. His weary eyes, even when closed, and the subtle curve of his mouth speak volumes. It’s not just about getting the likeness right, but about imbuing the drawing with his essence. For anyone looking to improve their 'digital art' skills, especially with character portraits, my biggest tip is to study references, but then interpret them in your own style. Don't be afraid to experiment with different brushes and blending modes. I'm currently using a combination of soft and hard-edged brushes in my chosen software to get these effects. This 'Viktor Arcane sketch' is still evolving, but I'm excited about the direction it's taking. I hope sharing my process helps inspire some of you to pick up your digital pens too! What are your favorite aspects of drawing characters from Arcane?
