At My Expense

We can become so considerate of everyone else that we forget to extend that same consideration to ourselves.

We think about how our words will make them feel. We stay quiet because we don’t want to upset them. We say yes when we want to say no. We tolerate things longer than we should because we understand where they’re coming from.

But constantly protecting other people’s feelings at the expense of your own can eventually put you in situations where you’re the one hurting just so everyone else can stay comfortable.

Being kind doesn’t require abandoning yourself. You can care about people, understand their feelings, and still have boundaries.

... Read moreFrom my experience, it’s incredibly easy to fall into the habit of prioritizing others’ comfort over your own well-being. I used to constantly say yes to requests or remain silent during difficult conversations to avoid conflict, believing it was a sign of kindness. However, this only led to feelings of resentment, exhaustion, and loss of self-respect. The phrase "You cannot keep abandoning yourself just to keep somebody else comfortable" really resonates with me. Once I realized this, I started setting clear and firm boundaries. For instance, I began politely declining invitations when I needed rest or expressing my true feelings even if it might upset someone momentarily. Doing so didn’t make me unkind; it actually improved my relationships because people appreciated my honesty and self-respect. A crucial part of this journey is recognizing that kindness shouldn’t come at the cost of your mental or emotional health. Choosing yourself doesn’t mean abandoning empathy—it means balancing care for others with care for yourself. Practicing self-love and protecting your peace are acts of strength, not selfishness. If you’re struggling with this balance, try reflecting on your daily interactions and notice where you might be sacrificing too much. Mindful communication, saying no without guilt, and understanding your own worth can transform how you relate to others and yourself. Remember, healthy boundaries empower you to be the best version of yourself, which ultimately helps others too.
