Full 12hr Shift of Eating

⏰ 1715hrs: enjoying my shaken espresso on the drive in to work. Tonight was the same marshmallow fluff/abuelita’s chocolate mix that I posted last time.

⏰ 1630hrs: crack open my first energy drink while I take report and look up my patients for the night

⏰ 2330hrs: snack time! I could eat these salami rolls every day and never grow tired of them. Just needed a quick bite while I start knocking out some charting.

⏰ 0200hrs: crappy cup of coffee while I do some more charting.

⏰ 0400hrs: not pictured is my second 8oz Redbull of the night. Was starting to drag and that cup of coffee was so gross I don’t think I had more than 3 sips of it

⏰ 0715hrs: pass on given and off the clock! Was absolutely starving and could not wait til I got home so I heated up my lunch and ate it on my walk to my car.

See you guys next shift!

... Read moreWorking a full 12-hour night shift as a bedside RN demands sustained energy and careful meal planning to avoid fatigue. My eating routine includes strategic timing and specific food choices to keep me alert and nourished through the long hours. Starting at 1715hrs, I enjoy a shaken espresso mixed with a comforting blend of marshmallow fluff and Abuelita’s chocolate, a comforting and unique twist on a standard coffee drink. This ritual kick-starts my energy as I drive to work. By 1630hrs, when the shift begins and I’m taking report and reviewing patient files, I crack open my first energy drink. I prefer lightly carbonated options like Red Bull to invigorate my senses without overwhelming my stomach. For a quick snack at 2330hrs, I reach for salami rolls paired with Kalamata olives and pepperoncini, combining protein and healthy fats that ward off hunger and provide steady energy. These foods are easy to eat while charting and allow me to maintain focus without a heavy meal slowing me down. During the quieter early morning hours at 0200hrs, I sip on a less enjoyable but necessary cup of coffee to keep my alertness steady. When that coffee doesn’t suffice, I turn to a second Red Bull at 0400hrs to overcome the slow drag that often hits in the pre-dawn hours. Finally, after the shift ends around 0715hrs, hunger finally sets in. I heat up and eat my pre-prepared lunch consisting of yellow rice, lemon pepper chicken, and asparagus. Eating while walking to my car is a practical way to refuel quickly before heading home. This eating timeline shows the balance between caffeine intake and nutrient-rich snacks and meals necessary to sustain long night shifts in healthcare. For others working similar hours, incorporating easily accessible, energizing, and tasty options like espresso blends, energy drinks, and protein-focused snacks can help maintain stamina and wellbeing throughout demanding shifts.
