I am 100% the type of person that gives up on something if I don’t succeed at it the first time. It’s a part of me I’m trying to change but keeping the motivation up to try again is rough.
If this sounds like you what are your tips not giving up on something new?
... Read moreIt’s so easy to feel discouraged when you pour your energy into something new, only for it to fall short of expectations. I've been there countless times, especially when tackling a big challenge like starting a new job. That initial excitement can quickly turn into self-doubt when the first task doesn't go smoothly, or you face unexpected hurdles. It feels like everyone else is sailing through, while you're constantly hitting roadblocks. For so long, my reaction was to just throw in the towel, thinking, 'Well, that didn't go as planned, so it's clearly not for me.' But I'm realizing that this mindset is holding me back, and I know I'm not alone in this struggle.
The key, I've learned, is cultivating a *growth mindset*. It's not about being perfect from day one, but about seeing every 'failure' or setback as a stepping stone, a chance to learn and adapt. For anyone navigating the rocky terrain of a new role, this perspective is invaluable. Here are a few things I'm trying to incorporate into my own journey to stop myself from giving up:
First, reframe setbacks as data points. Instead of a personal failing, view it as information. What went wrong? What can be done differently next time? This shift instantly makes the situation less emotional and more actionable. I've found that asking 'What did I learn?' instead of 'Why did I fail?' helps immensely.
Second, set realistic expectations. No one expects you to master everything in a new environment instantly. There will be a learning curve, and that's okay. When I started a new project recently, I reminded myself that the first iteration is rarely the final one. It's like planting a seed – you don't expect a full-grown plant overnight. You nurture it, give it sunlight and water, and patiently watch it grow.
Third, seek out feedback, not just validation. It's uncomfortable, but constructive criticism is a goldmine for growth. Ask colleagues or mentors for specific areas where you can improve. This isn't about proving yourself, but genuinely getting better. It’s like checking the soil and adjusting the water for your plant; you need external input to thrive.
Fourth, celebrate small wins and consistent effort. Sometimes, just showing up and trying again is a victory. Don't wait for a huge success to feel accomplished. Finishing that difficult report, understanding a complex system, or even just asking for help when needed – these are all steps forward. Each effort, however small, contributes to your overall growth, much like how every drop of water helps the plant grow. I even keep a gratitude journal to note these small victories.
Finally, practice self-compassion. It’s easy to be harsh on ourselves, but imagine talking to a friend in the same situation. Would you tell them to give up? Probably not. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding. If I'm feeling overwhelmed, sometimes I'll take a moment to pause. I might even use something calming, like a few drops of Texas Sage Oil, perhaps thinking about the natural resilience of plant matter and how it thrives through challenges. Just like the liquid in a jar, it needs to be nurtured to release its full potential. The vibrant green foliage around us is a constant reminder of nature's persistence, a metaphor for our own capacity to grow and adapt.
Remember, the journey of cultivating a growth mindset is ongoing. It's about showing up, trying, learning, and never truly giving up, even when it feels like nothing is going as planned.
