When I first started working on these pieces, my goal was to capture her unique vibe, moving from a traditional pencil sketch all the way to a vibrant digital illustration. It’s always such a journey, and I learn something new with every drawing! For the initial pencil sketch, I really focused on getting Lacey's core pose and expression down. I love sketching on different colored papers, and this time, using green paper added a cool, subtle undertone to the drawing. It’s amazing how the paper color can influence the mood! I spent a lot of time on her iconic headphones and the device she’s holding, trying to make them look just right. Sometimes, it's those small details, like adding the tiny 'iCoN' inscription I included, that truly bring a character to life. Getting both eyes to look symmetrical is always a challenge for me, but I've found that flipping the canvas or stepping away for a bit really helps. Don't be afraid to erase and redraw until it feels right – that's part of the process! Once I had a solid pencil sketch, I moved on to the digital version. This is where the magic of color really comes in! I love experimenting with a bright palette, and for Lacey, I envisioned her with striking blue hair and vibrant purple headphones. Choosing a white music player for contrast really made those colors pop. The background was another fun element to design; I went with a playful pink background adorned with musical notes to enhance her energetic, music-loving persona. When working digitally, I find it incredibly helpful to use separate layers for lines, base colors, shadows, and highlights. This allows for so much flexibility to adjust and refine each element without messing up the others. Don't be afraid to play around with different blending modes and brushes to get unique textures and effects. One of the biggest takeaways from this project for me was embracing the imperfections and enjoying the creative flow. There were moments when I felt stuck, especially trying to get the proportions just right or making sure the colors harmonized. But pushing through those little struggles is what makes the final piece so rewarding. If you're also into character drawing or want to try sketching someone like Lacey, my biggest tip is to start with loose, confident lines and build up the details gradually. Don't compare your beginnings to someone else's middle. Every artist has their own journey! I hope sharing my process gives you a little insight or maybe even inspires you to pick up your pencil or stylus. It's truly rewarding to see a character like Lacey come to life through art, whether it's a simple sketch or a fully colored digital piece. Happy drawing, everyone!
