My little guy, a spirited Mini Schnauzer, absolutely thrives on playtime, and our game of 'Batty Taps' is just one way we keep the fun going, even when it's chilly outside. It's not just about physical exercise; mental engagement is key, especially for active breeds like ours. For all you fellow pet owners out there, it can be a real challenge to keep our dogs stimulated when outdoor options are limited. Puzzle toys are brilliant – stuffing a KONG or using a snuffle mat can keep them busy for ages, tapping into their natural foraging instincts. It's like a mini-adventure right in your living room! We also love playing hide-and-seek. It’s incredibly simple but effective. Start with easy hiding spots and reward them excitedly when they find you. It strengthens their recall and makes them use their nose and brain. Another favorite is setting up an indoor obstacle course using household items like pillows, blankets, and low stools. Guiding them through it, or even teaching them to 'weave' between your legs, can be surprisingly tiring for them and great for building their coordination. And for those of us wanting to stay a bit active ourselves, training sessions are perfect. Teaching new tricks, reinforcing commands, or even trying out some 'doga' (dog yoga!) can be a fun way to incorporate movement for both of you. While we might not be doing 'hip thrusts' together, any activity that gets us off the couch and engaged with our pets contributes to a healthier lifestyle.
