When I first saw the idea, I thought, 'No way can I do that,' but honestly, it was so much fun and way easier than it looks. If you're looking for a show-stopping dessert that's still pretty low-stress, this is it. It’s perfect for birthdays, Father’s Day, game nights, or just a fun get-together with friends. Plus, who doesn't love a cupcake that you don't even need a plate for?
First things first, you'll need a bunch of cupcakes. I usually bake my own, but store-bought ones work perfectly too – no judgment here! The key is to arrange them in a rough beer mug shape on a large platter or a foil tray. Think of the main mug body, and then a few extra cupcakes for the handle. Don't worry if it's not absolutely perfect, the frosting does wonders to hide any imperfections!
Now for the fun part: decorating! This is where your beer mug really comes to life. I used yellow frosting for the main 'beer' part. You can either dye vanilla frosting yellow or use a lemon-flavored one for an extra zing. Spread it over the cupcakes, making sure to fill in the gaps between them so it looks like one cohesive cake. This is what makes it a 'pull-apart' cake, after all!
Next comes the iconic 'foam' and the 'handle.' For the foam, grab some white frosting – buttercream works perfectly for that fluffy, frothy look. I piped a generous layer along the top edge of the yellow 'beer.' You can even make it a bit uneven to give it a more realistic foamy effect. For the handle, use more white frosting to connect the handle cupcakes to the main mug body. I usually just spread it on thickly to give it some dimension.
And of course, we can't forget the sprinkles! This is where you can really personalize your beer mug pull apart cupcake cake. I used a mix of colorful sprinkles to make it festive, but you could go with a specific color theme, like team colors for a game day, or even beer-themed sprinkles if you can find them! They add such a fun pop and hide any little frosting mishaps.
What I loved most about making this was how forgiving it is. You absolutely don't need to be a professional baker to pull this off. It's more about having fun with it. And the best part? Everyone gets their own cupcake without needing to cut slices! It was a huge hit, and my friends couldn't believe how creative it was. Definitely give this a try for your next celebration – you won't regret it!
