January 2025 YA Novel about Grief and Loss
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this (relatively) short YA book, but I knew I was intrigued by the premise: a 17-year-old girl returns home from a bike ride to the shock of her family, because she actually died from a bike accident seven years ago. So was this going to be a ghost story, a thriller, a science fiction?
I would describe this book as being supernatural in that it deals with the spirit realm and the idea that the dead never truly leave us, that they remain in our lives in a different form that is no less valuable to their loved ones.
In the author’s note, @gayleforman discusses the difference between the platitude “I’m sorry for your loss” versus the traditional Jewish reply “May their memory be a blessing”. The latter is more meaningful because it provides instructions on how to live after losing someone. With that being said, this book is kind of a parable of that phrase. It’s a beautiful, inspiring story that I will think about for a long time.
