Zen
I know I only post about three of my horses but I figured I’d introduce one of the OGs.
Zendaya, and no I didn’t name her after the actress lol, is a grade mare that we are guessing is in her 20s and also guessing that she’s a quarter horse.
We’ve had her for about 12 year and I used to do barrels and show ranch classes on her.
Sadly she was diagnosed with navicular and ring bone arthritis so now she lives out her days enjoying bossing around Scotty and the girls!
And don’t get between her and Scotty, he may be a gelding, but they are madly in love!
Having cared for Zendaya over the years, I’ve gained a deep appreciation for the resilience and spirit of horses diagnosed with conditions like navicular syndrome and ringbone arthritis. These ailments primarily affect the horse’s hooves and joints, causing discomfort and limiting their performance, especially in high-impact activities such as barrel racing. Navicular syndrome is a degenerative condition that affects the navicular bone and surrounding tissues, leading to chronic lameness. Ringbone arthritis refers to bony growths around the pastern and coffin joints, which can affect flexibility and cause pain. Managing these conditions often requires a combination of veterinary care, specialized farriery, and adjusted exercise routines. In Zendaya’s case, transitioning her from performance activities to a more relaxed environment has been vital. Now, she spends her days enjoying the company of Scotty and other mares, often asserting her ‘boss’ status. This social interaction is important, as horses thrive on companionship and mental stimulation. For horse owners facing similar challenges, it’s encouraging to know that with proper management, horses with navicular and ringbone arthritis can still lead fulfilling lives. Regular veterinary check-ups, cushioned shoeing, and pain management strategies help maintain their quality of life. Every horse has its own unique personality and story, and sharing these experiences helps build a supportive community. Zendaya’s journey from a barrel racing star to a cherished senior horse illustrates the deep bond between humans and their equine companions, emphasizing care, patience, and love through all stages of life.
