Leather projects

... Read moreHey everyone! I often get asked about how I turn cherished images, like portraits or specific motifs, into those beautiful, rustic pieces of traditional leather art. It's truly a labor of love, and I want to share a glimpse into my process and what makes these pieces so special. When someone comes to me wanting something truly unique – maybe their family crest, a beloved pet, or even a detailed scene like an oil rig or a lineman on a utility pole – the first step is always the design. It starts with a clear image or concept, which I then carefully render onto the leather. This isn't just about tracing; it's about interpreting the image in a way that suits the leather medium, ensuring those deep textures and that handcrafted feel come through. The magic really begins with the tooling. I primarily use vegetable-tanned leather because it's perfect for holding the impressions from my tools. After casing the leather (making it damp to allow for pliability), I use a swivel knife to cut the main outline of the design. This forms the foundational lines for what will become a 3D image. Next comes the array of stamping tools. Bevelers, for example, are crucial for creating depth and definition around the cut lines, making the design stand out from the background. Background tools push the leather down, creating a contrasting, often textured, background that further emphasizes the main subject. I love how a simple pear shader can give life to floral designs or how a veiner tool can add incredible detail to leaves and feathers, like those I use on duck motifs for game carriers, or for intricate patterns on a custom wallet for someone like HOMERO MEJIA or DOWD. To achieve that warm, earthy tone and highlight the deep textures, I use a combination of antiquing and dyeing. After the tooling is complete, a careful application of antique stain settles into the lower parts of the tooling, making the raised areas pop. This really brings out the rustic charm and gives the piece that aged, traditional look. Sometimes, I'll add specific dyes to elements, like making the playing cards on a custom belt truly stand out, or giving the rooster on another belt a vibrant touch. It’s all about layering these techniques to build up the image. For instance, creating the basketweave pattern you see on many of my belts or duck straps (like for JACKSON and GUNNER) adds another layer of texture and visual interest, complementing the main design. Even small details, like the letters 'KP' on a chef's hat patch or 'IN DA FLY' on a belt, are carefully tooled to integrate seamlessly into the overall design. The beauty of custom leatherwork is its enduring quality and personal touch. Imagine carrying a wallet with a detailed welder motif, or wearing a trucker hat with a uniquely tooled patch. These aren't just accessories; they're wearable art, crafted with care to tell a story or represent something meaningful to the owner. This is why I pour so much passion into every custom piece, ensuring it has that unique, handcrafted feel and will be cherished for years to come.
