Cooking Still Life (Multi-Block Print)

This is the final #printmaking assignment I made at school this semester. This #stilllife is based on how my #cooking skills have changed over the last few years. The #food and condiments here are what I've mostly used to improve my cooking skills.

I made another version of this #print using black ink. I really like how it looks, so I want to show it here too.

I made a multi-block print a couple of months ago, but I wasn't happy with it. I wanted to try it again and used this printing method with this project. I'm much happier with how it looks here.

Read moreMulti-block printmaking is a traditional and creative method that allows artists to produce complex images by carving and printing from multiple blocks, each representing different colors or parts of the design. This technique gives prints dynamic depth and rich texture, which can be especially effective in conveying the tactile nature of still life subjects such as food and cooking ingredients. In this project, the artist reflects on personal growth in cooking skills by translating those experiences into visual art through printmaking. The depiction of various foods and condiments not only adds authenticity to the still life but also symbolizes the ingredients and flavors that have influenced the artist's culinary journey. Using these familiar objects as motifs invites viewers to connect with the artwork on both aesthetic and personal levels. The choice to revisit and improve a previous multi-block print highlights the iterative process common in art, where experimentation leads to refinement. By adopting black ink in the alternative version, the artist enhances contrast and emphasizes form, dramatically changing the mood and focus of the piece. Such variations demonstrate how printmakers can manipulate materials and techniques to achieve desired effects. For those interested in printmaking or creative explorations combining food and art, this work illustrates how traditional print methods can document personal stories and everyday themes. Understanding the nuances of multi-block printing—from block preparation to layering and registration—can empower artists to bring their visions to life with precision and creativity. Engaging in a school assignment that challenges technical skill and personal expression, the artist successfully merges the world of cooking with printmaking, creating a unique narrative that celebrates growth, creativity, and craftsmanship.
