The day of the 600km drive to see the blue water, 10 minutes.

Hokitika Gorge
A place known for
"Blue-green water" seen very often on Instagram
The problem is...It's on different sides of the South Island.
That morning we left Christchurch.
Driving across the Southern Alps.
Stop by the giant rock at Castle Hill.
Through Arthur's Pass.
And spent most of the day in the car.
🚗 About 600 kilometers round trip.
To one destination.
When you get there...The picture in front is as beautiful as the real picture.
The blue-green water is as clear as the color.
A small suspension bridge in the middle of the valley.
And the woods around that look like a scene in a movie.
But the funny thing is...
It took us hours to drive.
To spend less than 10 minutes there.
🌧️ Because it's starting to rain.
🚧 Some of the walking trails are closed.
And we have to leave quickly.
Before it's too dark.
If recommended...
This is one of the tourist plans we don't recommend to follow. 😅
Driving round-trip in one day wastes too much time on the road.
If there's another chance
We'll choose to sleep in Hokitika for at least 1 night.
To have more time to visit the West Coast.
Christchurch → Castle Hill → Arthur's Pass → Hokitika Gorge → Christchurch
Lesson learned:
Just because a destination looks close on the map, doesn't mean it's a good day trip. 🤣

การเดินทางครั้งนี้ทำให้ผมเรียนรู้ว่าบางสถานที่บนแผนที่ดูเหมือนใกล้ แต่ความจริงใช้เวลาขับรถนานกว่าที่คิดมาก Hokitika Gorge เป็นสถานที่ที่ผมตั้งใจไปด้วยภาพน้ำสีฟ้าอมเขียวที่เห็นบ่อยใน Instagram ซึ่งจริง ๆ แล้วสวยน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจมาก เมื่อนั่งรถข้ามเทือกเขา Southern Alps แล้วยังได้แวะชมก้อนหินยักษ์ที่ Castle Hill และตัวเส้นทางที่ผ่าน Arthur’s Pass ก็เต็มไปด้วยวิวธรรมชาติที่สวยงามแบบไม่รู้เบื่อ อย่างไรก็ดี การใช้เวลาขับรถเกือบทั้งวันเพื่อมาถึงสถานที่ และได้อยู่เพียงแค่ประมาณ 10 นาทีเนื่องจากฝนตกและเส้นทางบางส่วนปิดนั้น เป็นเรื่องน่าผิดหวัง ผมเองก็รู้สึกว่าแผนนี้ไม่ค่อยคุ้มเท่าไหร่ การขับรถไป–กลับ 600 กม.ในวันเดียวทำให้เหนื่อยและเสียเวลาบนถนนมากโข ถ้ามีโอกาสอีกครั้ง ผมจะวางแผนล่วงหน้าให้ดีและเลือกนอนพักที่เมือง Hokitika อย่างน้อยหนึ่งคืน เพื่อให้มีเวลาสำรวจ West Coast อย่างจุใจ และไม่ต้องรีบเร่งออกเดินทางกลับก่อนมืด เส้นทางตั้งแต่ Christchurch ผ่าน Castle Hill, Arthur’s Pass ไปจนถึง Hokitika Gorge เต็มไปด้วยโอกาสให้ได้ชมวิวสวย ๆ และธรรมชาติที่น่าหลงใหล ไม่ว่าจะเป็นทิวเขา ป่าเขียวขจี และแกะจำนวนมากที่สามารถพบเห็นในระหว่างทาง นอกจากนี้ การเดินทางแบบ roadtrip ทำให้ได้เรียนรู้ว่าการเตรียมตัวเรื่องสภาพอากาศก็สำคัญมาก โดยเฉพาะถ้าคุณจะไปช่วงที่ฝนตกบ่อย ควรตรวจเช็คสภาพถนนและเส้นทางก่อนออกเดินทาง เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงเส้นทางปิด และวางแผนการเดินทางอย่างยืดหยุ่นที่สุด สุดท้ายนี้ ผมอยากแนะนำให้ใครที่ชอบถ่ายรูปและชื่นชอบวิวธรรมชาติไม่ควรพลาด Hokitika Gorge น้ำสีฟ้าอมเขียวและบรรยากาศป่าเขาที่นี่เป็นอีกหนึ่งมุมที่สวยงามและเหมือนหลุดเข้าไปอยู่ในหนังแฟนตาซีเลยทีเดียว
