Carving portraits ✍️

... Read moreHey everyone! I've been absolutely loving my new craft obsession: soapstone carving, and I wanted to share why it's been such a game-changer for my creative outlet. If you've ever felt intimidated by carving, soapstone is the perfect place to start. It's incredibly soft and forgiving, making it ideal for beginners like me to create beautiful pieces without needing expensive tools or years of practice. What exactly is soapstone? It's a natural metamorphic rock, mostly composed of talc, which is why it feels so smooth and, well, 'soapy' to the touch! Its softness means you can carve it with simple hand tools, and it produces minimal dust compared to other stone types, though a dust mask is always a good idea. Plus, it's pretty readily available in different colors like grey, green, or even black, offering a beautiful range for your creations. To get started, you don't need much. I picked up a basic soapstone carving kit online, which usually includes a few small chisels or dental-style tools, a rasp, and various grits of sandpaper. You'll also need a block of soapstone – you can find these at art supply stores, craft shops, or even online specialty retailers. Don't forget safety essentials: a dust mask to protect your lungs from fine particles and safety goggles to shield your eyes from any flying chips. Safety first makes the carving process much more enjoyable! My first few projects weren't portraits, actually! I started with simple abstract shapes, just getting a feel for the material and how it responds to different tools. I highly recommend beginning with something basic, like a smooth, rounded pebble shape, or even a small animal silhouette. These simpler forms allow you to practice your technique without the pressure of intricate details. Once you get comfortable and understand the stone's properties, you can confidently move on to more intricate designs, like the portraits I've been experimenting with. Here’s a simplified breakdown of how I typically approach a carving: Design: I start by sketching my desired shape or portrait outline directly onto the soapstone block with a pencil. Don't worry if it's not perfect; you can always adjust as you go by carving away mistakes. Roughing Out: Using my larger carving tools, I carefully remove the excess stone around my sketch, slowly revealing the main form. Think of it like peeling an apple, taking off small layers at a time. Patience is key here! Refining: This is where the details come in. I switch to smaller, finer tools to carve out expressions, hair textures, or specific features if I'm working on a portrait. For abstract pieces, I focus on creating interesting curves and depths, adding texture and dimension. Sanding: Once the shape is exactly how I want it, I move to sanding. I start with a coarse grit sandpaper (like 100 or 220 grit) to smooth out tool marks, then progressively move to finer grits (400, 600, even 1000 or 1500 grit) until the surface feels incredibly smooth. This is where the magic happens and the stone really starts to shine. Polishing: The final step is to rub a little mineral oil or beeswax onto the carved piece. This deepens the color of the soapstone and brings out its natural luster, making it look absolutely stunning and giving it that beautiful, finished feel. My biggest tip for beginners? Don't be afraid to make mistakes! Soapstone is forgiving, and you can often carve away imperfections or adapt your design as you go. Just enjoy the process of transforming a simple block of stone into something beautiful with your own hands. It's incredibly therapeutic, and the sense of accomplishment you get from holding your finished piece is truly rewarding. Give soapstone carving a try – you might just find your new favorite hobby!

Best Camera Settings for Portraits
One thing I LOVE about my 50mm lens is the ability to bring my f stop all the way down to f 1.4! Remember it’s easy to bring it down that low but adjust your shutter to accommodate it. These examples were taken on a super sunny day, so my shutter speed was super fast. And ISO super low. What
