... Read moreAfter creating that fun 10-second timelapse of my Pothos, I've had so many friends ask me about how I get my plants to grow so vibrantly, especially when it comes to propagation. It's truly rewarding to watch them thrive, and honestly, Pothos are one of the easiest and most forgiving plants to propagate, making them perfect for beginners and seasoned plant parents alike! If you're curious to see that kind of rapid growth in your own home, let me share some of my favorite tips, especially for water propagation. Water propagation is my go-to method for Pothos because it's so simple and you get to watch the roots develop firsthand. Here’s how I do it: Choose a Healthy Stem: Look for a healthy vine with at least 2-3 leaves and a visible 'node'. The node is that little bump on the stem where a leaf grows, and it's where the new roots will emerge. Make a Clean Cut: Using clean, sharp scissors or pruners, snip the stem just below a node. I usually aim for a cutting that's about 4-6 inches long, ensuring it has at least one node that will be submerged in water and a few leaves above the waterline. Prepare Your Cutting: Carefully remove any leaves that would be submerged in the water. This prevents them from rotting and fouling the water, which can hinder root development. Place in Water: Pop your cutting into a clean glass or jar filled with fresh, room-temperature water. I love using clear containers so I can easily observe the root growth – it's part of the fun! Find the Right Spot: Place your jar in a spot that gets bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can be too intense and promote algae growth in the water. A warm spot in your home will encourage faster rooting. Change the Water Regularly: This is crucial! I change the water every 3-5 days, or whenever it starts to look cloudy. Fresh water provides oxygen and prevents bacterial buildup. Typically, you'll start to see tiny white roots emerging from the nodes within 1-3 weeks. Once the roots are about 1-2 inches long, your Pothos cutting is ready to be planted in soil! It’s such a satisfying process to watch. Beyond propagation, ensuring your Pothos grows quickly and healthily involves a few simple care steps. They absolutely love bright, indirect light – that's where you'll see the most vigorous growth, just like in my timelapse! While they can tolerate lower light, their growth will be slower and leaves might be smaller. Water them when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch, and make sure their pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), I give mine a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month. Plus, don't be afraid to prune your Pothos! Trimming back long vines encourages bushier growth and provides you with more cuttings for propagation. Seeing your Pothos grow, whether it's through a speedy timelapse or watching new roots emerge in a jar, is incredibly satisfying. Don't be afraid to experiment with propagation – it's a fantastic way to expand your plant collection or share the green love with friends. Happy planting!
