stop lifting in TENNIS SHOES

Many people do not know this, but lifting in tennis shoes is actually hurting your progress.

Imagine lifting on a marshmellow, not very stable huh? This is similarly to what it's like when lifting in tennis shoes. You should be lifting in flat shoes or NO shoes. This is because you will have more stability, more grip, and can lift at full capacity. This is primarily for lower body lifts and lower body focused workouts.

My favorite flat shoes are from "No Bull" but sometimes I go no shoes as well.

... Read moreOkay, so we’ve established that those squishy tennis shoes aren't doing your weightlifting gains any favors, especially for lower body workouts. But let's dive a little deeper into why stability is such a game-changer and explore some practical alternatives beyond just 'flat shoes.' My personal experience has shown that once you really understand the mechanics, it clicks. When you're lifting heavy, especially during exercises like squats, deadlifts, or even hip thrusts, your feet are your foundation. Imagine trying to build a tall tower on a wobbly base – it's just not going to work efficiently, right? That's exactly what happens when your feet sink into cushioned tennis shoes. You lose that crucial connection to the ground, which translates to instability, wasted energy, and ultimately, less power in your lifts. The goal is maximum stability and grip, allowing you to lift at your full capacity. So, what are your best bets? Going Barefoot or in Socks: This is the ultimate for ground feel and proprioception (your body's awareness in space). I often do my warm-up sets or lighter accessory work, like RDLs or calf raises, in just socks. The immediate feedback from the floor helps refine my form. For exercises like deadlifts, having that direct contact can really help you 'root' yourself, engaging your posterior chain more effectively. However, for heavier lifts or if your gym has strict rules, it might not always be practical or safe (think dropped weights!). Plus, some people just prefer the protection of a shoe. Flat-Soled Minimalist Shoes: Brands like No Bull, Converse Chuck Taylors, or even some specific cross-training shoes fit this bill. What you're looking for is a shoe with a thin, firm, non-compressible sole and typically a 'zero drop' (meaning no height difference between the heel and toe). This allows your foot to spread naturally, providing a wider, more stable base. These are fantastic for most powerlifting movements – squats, deadlifts, bench press – because they maximize stability and grip during workouts without compromising your natural foot mechanics. They give you protection while still feeling grounded. Specialized Weightlifting Shoes: Now, these are a bit different. They usually feature a raised, incompressible heel. While the article emphasizes flat shoes, it's worth mentioning that these are specifically designed for Olympic lifts (snatches, clean & jerks) and high-bar squats. The elevated heel can help lifters with ankle mobility limitations hit deeper squat depths while maintaining an upright torso. However, they are generally NOT recommended for deadlifts or RDLs, where a flat, grounded foot is preferred for optimal hip hinge mechanics. Knowing the difference can really optimize your training! When I first started focusing on my footwear, I noticed a huge difference in my lower body workouts. My squats felt more solid, my hip thrusts had more drive, and I felt much more connected to the lift. If you're making the switch, start gradually. Maybe try a few sets in socks during your next leg day, or invest in an affordable pair of flat-soled sneakers. Pay attention to how your body feels and how your stability improves. It’s a small change that yields big results for your strength and overall lifting efficiency!
