PILATES DOES NOT REPLACE WEIGHT TRAINING

Now hear me out - I am not saying to stop pilates by any means but weight training is not replaceable.

Weight training is so important and essential for women's health because it does not come with the plateau you can face with pilates. Yes, can beginners see physical progress from doing pilates, ABSOLUTELY. But pilates has a restriction on the amount of resistance, correct?

Weight training has zero restrictions on resistance and it is far superior when building muscle, maintaining muscle, improving bone density and longevity. You may be wondering, why does any of that matter?

Well as women muscle mass is harder to build as we age, and we actually start to lose muscle as we get older. Bone density is also key health indicator as well, women lose bone density as we age and our risk for osteoporosis is higher than mens. What combats this symptoms of aging? WEIGHT TRAINING.

... Read moreI've been on a fitness journey for a while now, and one thing I’ve learned is how important it is to understand what each exercise method brings to the table. Take Pilates donkey kicks, for example. They're fantastic for really isolating and strengthening your glutes and core, giving you that 'burn' and improving stability. When I do them, I focus on slow, controlled movements, keeping my core engaged and avoiding arching my back. It’s all about quality over quantity to sculpt those muscles and improve hip mobility. However, as much as I love my Pilates sessions, I've personally experienced how quickly you can hit a plateau when you're looking to significantly build muscle or improve bone strength. That's where weight training truly shines, especially for us women. I used to shy away from heavy lifting, but learning about its profound impact on bone density has been a game-changer for my long-term health perspective. As we age, declining bone density is a real concern, increasing our risk of osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercises, like squats, deadlifts, and lunges, put stress on your bones, stimulating them to become stronger and denser. It’s like telling your body, "Hey, I need stronger bones here!" and your body responds by adapting. And let's talk about increasing muscle density. This isn't just about looking toned; it's about metabolic health, strength, and preventing muscle loss as we get older. While Pilates can build lean muscle, the progressive overload you can achieve with weight training is unmatched for significant muscle growth and density. You can constantly challenge your muscles with more weight, reps, or sets, forcing them to adapt and grow stronger. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my overall strength and endurance since I started consistently lifting. For those who love the idea of donkey kicks but want to level up, try incorporating smith machine donkey kicks. This is a brilliant way to add significant resistance to the movement, really targeting your glutes with heavier loads in a controlled manner. Using the smith machine allows you to focus purely on the muscle contraction without worrying as much about balance. Just make sure your form is spot on: keep your core tight, back straight, and lift with your glutes, not your lower back. It’s a great example of how you can take an effective bodyweight exercise and transform it into a powerful muscle-building movement with added resistance. Ultimately, it’s not about choosing one over the other. I've found that combining the flexibility and core strength from Pilates with the bone-building and muscle-gaining power of weight training gives me the best of both worlds for a truly comprehensive fitness routine. It’s all about understanding what your body needs at different stages and using the right tools to achieve your health goals!
