There was one news that was read and accidentally smiled. 🤍

I believe many parents have been through the same period...

When you start to be two months old, we start seriously studying vaccine information, reading doctor advice, reading articles, reading experiences from other parents because we want to choose the best for you.

One of the vaccines that is always talked about is the PCV vaccine, which in the past, many families chose to inject further according to the pediatrician's advice, even at their own expense.

But there is very nice news today.

The National Board of Health Guarantee (SPNTC) has agreed to package a vaccine against conjugated pneumococcal infection (PCV) as a benefit for Thai children in the National Health Guarantee System.

Thai children receive three free vaccines.

🤍 12 months old.

And it is scheduled to begin service from October 1, 2026.

For us, this news is not just the word "free."

But it means that hundreds of thousands of Thai children will have access to more important vaccines, and that's really a pleasure.

So what is the PCV vaccine?

PCV stands for Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine.

It is a vaccine that prevents infection with the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus.

It causes many diseases, especially in young children, because the immune system is not fully developed.

Many people may think of just "pneumonia."

But it can actually cause many different forms of disease, such as:

🤍 Sinusitis.

And in some cases, infections can spread into the bloodstream or the cortex, causing invasive Pneumococcal Disease, such as IPD.

How many vaccines will Thai children receive?

According to the resolution, Thai children will receive a total of three vaccines.

💉 12 months old.

It's a 2 + 1 Schedule injection.

Immunization during infancy twice, and immunization again at the age of one year, according to the recommendations of the Immunization Subcommittee.

Many people ask... how many strains will the free vaccine cover?

This is a very often seen question after this news is out.

In the announcement, the NCPO stated that

The vaccine to be supplied must cover "at least 10 major pathogenic strains."

Many therefore suspect that

"But see, there's PCV13, PCV15 or PCV20 already?"

Yes, there are many vaccines, such as

• PCV10 covers 10 species

• PCV13 covers 13 species

• PCV15 covers 15 species

• PCV20 covers 20 species

The number on the back is the number of pneumococcal strains covered by the vaccine.

But what I want to invite everyone to understand is...

The number of species is not the whole answer.

There are more than 100 species of pneumococcus (Serotypes), and not all species cause disease in children equally often.

When a country chooses a vaccine in a national program, it's not just that "the more numbers, the better."

But many things have to be considered together.

✔️ Outbreak data

✔️ Effectiveness of vaccines

✔️ Economics worthiness

✔️ Availability of service systems

All of which are data that the NCPO has identified as being considered.

Therefore, it should not be determined which vaccine is better from the "number of strains" alone.

So what brand of vaccine would it be?

The answer is...

There is no announcement yet.

In its resolution, the NCPO stated only the criteria that the vaccine to be supplied must be

✔️ Convenient use for service unit

✔️. Worth the national budget.

The section details which version or brand of the vaccine will be available. It also needs to wait for procurement results and be officially announced again.

Why is this news important?

In the past, PCV vaccines were vaccines that many families had to plan for additional costs if they wanted their children to receive.

Packing this vaccine is a benefit, so it doesn't just mean adding one more vaccine.

But means
