Mondays are always the longest day of the week.
Whose going to do it if you don't?
Okay, let's be real – who else feels like Mondays are just an endless tunnel? 😩 I swear, sometimes it feels like Friday was just five minutes ago, and here we are, staring down a whole new work week. That nagging thought, 'Whose going to do it if you don't?', hits extra hard on a Monday morning when all you want to do is hit snooze again (and again!). I've spent countless Mondays wondering why they feel so much longer than any other day. It's not just the clock, right? There has to be something more to it. After a lot of my own Monday blues, I've come up with a few personal theories and observations that might resonate with you too. One big reason, for me, is the abrupt shift from weekend freedom. On Saturday and Sunday, I can wake up when I want, do things at my own pace, and generally just *be*. Then Monday hits, and suddenly it's alarms, deadlines, and a full schedule. That jarring transition can make the hours tick by so slowly because your brain is still yearning for that relaxed state. It’s like trying to force a square peg into a round hole – resistance makes everything feel harder and longer. Then there’s the sheer weight of anticipation. Monday isn't just one day; it's the start of everything that needs to happen in the week. All the tasks, meetings, and responsibilities that have been building up over the weekend suddenly come crashing down. When you’re looking at a mountain of work, each individual minute feels longer as you trudge up the slope. I often find myself mentally listing out everything, and it can feel totally overwhelming before I even open my laptop. Another factor is our sleep patterns. Many of us, myself included, tend to shift our sleep schedule on the weekends, staying up later and sleeping in more. While it feels great at the time, come Sunday night, trying to reset for an early Monday start can really mess with your circadian rhythm. Waking up groggy and tired already puts you at a disadvantage, making time feel distorted and the day feel like it's dragging its feet. So, what can we do about it? I'm no expert, but I've found a few little things that have helped me personally, even if it’s just a tiny bit. First, I try to do a 'mini-prep' on Sunday evening. This isn't about working, but more about setting myself up for a smoother Monday. Maybe I pick out my outfit, prep some lunch, or just generally tidy up so I don't wake up to chaos. It takes away some of that initial Monday morning scramble. Second, I try to ease into Monday morning rather than jumping straight into the hardest tasks. Maybe it's enjoying my coffee while listening to a podcast, or tackling just one small, easy task first to get a quick win. It helps build a bit of positive momentum instead of feeling instantly defeated. Third, and this is a big one for me, I try to schedule something I genuinely look forward to on Monday. It could be grabbing a nice lunch, a quick walk outside, or planning a fun dinner. Having a little reward or bright spot to look forward to can break up the monotony and make the day feel less like an endless chore. Mondays might always feel a bit tougher, but understanding why can help us navigate them a little better. Remember, you're not alone in feeling like they stretch forever, and taking small steps to make them more manageable can make a huge difference!
