From my experience, dogs respond better and more attentively when you consistently use their real name, as it reinforces recognition and communication. Many dog owners affectionately come up with an array of nicknames that express endearment, humor, or a pet’s personality traits. However, relying solely on these nicknames can sometimes confuse your dog during training or commands. For example, my friend’s dog, Smeagol, has over 50 different nicknames, but his response is most consistent when called by 'Smeagol.' Using your dog's name also plays a significant role in their socialization and safety. When they hear their name clearly, they are more likely to come when called, which is crucial during walks or emergency situations. In addition to strengthening your bond, using your dog’s name helps them feel like a valued family member—a best friend who recognizes their unique identity. Try balancing affectionate nicknames with using the true name, especially during interactions and training sessions. This approach enhances both your relationship and your dog's behavior. Overall, calling your dog by their real name while enjoying creative nicknames captures the best of both worlds: effective communication and endearing expressions of love.
