Gray money and two Thai people
Gray capital may shake ‼️ "thousands of banks disappear from the system," 1.4 billion. The PTT has an eye on cash outside the system, but there is no plan to cancel the notes.

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) released information that was being watched after two versions of the 1,000 baht note, about 20 to 30 years old, with a total value of about 140 billion baht, did not flow back into the financial system as usual.

The BOT views the figures as a sign to follow, but it is not yet possible to conclude that all the money is related to illegal business, grey capital or corruption, as there may be cash kept by the public themselves and not circulated through the banking system included.

At the same time, the idea of cancellation of certain notes, or Demonetization, has been discussed in analyst circles as possibly one of the tools used to pull cash outside the financial system back into the financial system; if cancellation is actually announced, the holder of the notes must be redeemed or deposited within specified conditions and periods, which can cause large cash transactions to be subject to attribution verification.

The key point, however, is that as of mid-August 2026, the BOT has not announced the cancellation of any version of the 1,000 baht note, and the public can still use the existing notes as usual.

The measures that the public sector is now focusing on are monitoring high-value cash transactions, monitoring the exchange of large numbers of notes, and harmonizing relevant departments to monitor digital asset transactions, especially those of an unusual nature.

For the general public, the non-return of some older notes does not automatically mean that they are illegal money. To act on any money or property must be determined by evidence and the origin of the money on a case-by-case basis. The DEA reiterates that the figure is an "anomaly sign," not the conclusion that it is entirely illegal money.

🌀 "thousand banks have disappeared from the system," about $1.4 billion, is the information that the BOT is watching, but no notes have been cancelled yet, while the Demonetization concept is still just a talking proposition. If one day it is implemented, many cash holders may have to show up and put more money into the audit system, especially money outside the system for a long time.
