What is aphantasia and my art process?
Aphantasia is the inability to visualize images in your mind.
People with aphantasia can’t form mental pictures — even when trying to imagine a face, a place, or a memory, their “mind’s eye” is completely blank. For example, if someone says “picture a red apple,” most people can see it in their head. A person with aphantasia can’t.
It affects:
• Visualization (imagining scenes, objects, or people)
• Memory recall (some have less vivid or non-visual memories)
• Dreams (some people with aphantasia don’t see images in dreams, or rarely dream visually)
• Creative processes (some do art, music, writing just in different ways)
But aphantasia doesn’t mean a lack of creativity. Many artists, writers, and creators have it — they just work with concepts, feelings, or references rather than internal imagery. It’s simply a different way the brain processes imagination.
I live with aphantasia — I can’t see images in my mind.
No mental pictures, no imagination playing like a movie, no visual memory. Just blank space.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t create.
Everything I draw comes from instinct, emotion, and abstract thought. I rely on shapes, feelings, movement — not mental visuals. These biomechanical sea creatures, inspired by a shark and an anglerfish, are built piece by piece without ever “seeing” them in my head.
Aphantasia doesn’t limit my imagination — it transforms it.
It forces me to create my own visual world, without copying one from inside my mind.
This is how I see — not with sight, but with soul.
